Day 4922

The weather was a little better today. When we took Dawn on her early morning walk the oppressive humidity was gone. There was a nice breeze and the temperature was in the mid 70's. Of course this didn't last long. By 10 AM it was just another hot summer day. At least Dawn got a nice walk. She's only been getting one walk a day lately since it is too hot in the afternoon.

After breakfast this morning I hauled some brush out to the curb for bulky trash pickup. I wasn't outside long, but it was enough to convince me not to bother with my long walk. Oh, well. I need to make a habit of going to the gym anyway. I'm not good at making resolutions, but I really need to work on improving my upper body strength.

I feel like I'm getting a decent workout at the gym, but both my Fitbit and Apple Watch say that I'm actually getting more exercise on my long walks. It's probably just the amount of time I spend walking. Twenty minutes on a treadmill really doesn't equate to several hours on the trails. I like walking, but I'm probably going to be spending a lot of time at the gym for the next several weeks. According to the weather forecast, the temperature is going to be in the high nineties for the next ten days.

Walking is probably better for me. The rowing machine is hard on my shoulders. When I'm using the treadmill I worry that one of my knees might go out. I'm not terribly strong at this point. Whenever I use a machine, I usually have to subtract some weights from what the previous person used. At the time of day I usually go to the gym it feels a lot like a geriatric physical therapy center. Most of the people on the floor seem even older than I am. Some of them do pretty well though. I've got a long way to go before I could keep up with some of these old codgers.

My editor at SpaceFlight Magazine wants me to attend a media day for the Orion Spacecraft program at Kennedy Space Center. I told him I'd think about it. There is no launch involved, but media would have access to the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building where the Orion capsules for Artemis II through IV are in the process of being assembled. I applied for credentials to this event, but NASA hasn't set a date for the Media Day yet. We'll see what happens. I guess I'm always looking for an excuse to go back to the space center.

I also keep looking for an excuse to avoid mowing the grass. It's definitely time to mow again. I'm going to have to do this very early in the day, because it's just too hot once the sun is high in the sky. Maybe sometime next week. Tomorrow I do my grocery shopping and Sunday I always go mall walking. Monday isn't good either. I don't like the idea of mowing grass on my birthday. 

Janet does her grocery shopping on Friday and Dawn spends the entire morning waiting for her to return with the groceries. The ritual of putting away sacks of groceries seems very special to Dawn. She only gets excited about Janet's groceries though. When I return from my own grocery shopping Dawn doesn't even get off the bed.

My trips to the gym must be working because I feel sore in brand new places. My goals in life are simple now. I've just got to keep moving.

Day 4858

The big event of the day was seeing one of the bald eagles again. When we were taking Dawn on her early walk this morning there was an eagle in a tree very near us. I haven't seen the eagles in so long that I honestly thought they were gone. This was the first time Janet had seen them at all. I wish I'd had my camera with me because it would have made a nice picture. 

It was kind of funny that the eagle was only about 500 yeards away from the tree with the baby owls. As usual, there were a group of photographers under the tree photographing the owls. They didn't even realize that there was an eagle, and probably a much better picture, very nearby. I think Janet and I were the only ones who saw the eagle because it flew away shortly after we passed.

The weather continues to be near perfect. I'm used to walking in all types of weather and it's rare to have conditions when it's not too cold or too hot. It's a luxury to be able to take a walk without getting hot and sweaty or wearing a heavy coat. I think Dawn likes this weather too. She loves sitting out in the back yard on days like these. I still get tired by the time I finish my long walk, but this is the best time of year to be out in the park. Everything is green and pretty with an abundance of wildflowers. I forget when the mosquitos start arriving, but I haven't seen or felt any yet. Hopefully this nice Spring weather will morph into a mild Summer. I don't know if I can handle a Texas heat wave anymore.

I need to finish raking the remaining leaves because it's time to set out items for bulky trash pickup again. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow. I thought about raking this afternoon, but I was tired and didn't feel like getting dirty. I tried to get rid of fire ant mounds instead. The fire ants seem to get worse and worse every year. I'm not sure if the fire ant granules I put out even work. One of the mounds I treated last week still had ants in it today. Fire ants are even appearing through cracks in our sidewalks now. It's getting out of hand.

I need to learn more about weather. For the past several days it has been completely clear in the morning. Then around mid-day lots of puffy cumulus clouds develop. Late in the afternoon the clouds disappear and it is clear again. I'm guessing that as the ground heats up, moisture evaporates and forms into clouds. I could be wrong though. These are definitely not rain clouds. They just appear during the warmest part of the day.

Drivers in Dallas keep getting worse and worse. A reckless driver nearly destroyed a recently restored building in the park built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930's. Yesterday there was a fatality accident near the dam at the southern part of the lake. Today I saw another serious wreck with several wreckers and lots of cops as I was returning home from my walk. People don't even seem to be trying to watch the road anymore. It's one of many reasons I don't like to drive in Dallas.

I've taken this weeks' trash out to the curb, so I guess my week is over. Tomorrow Dawn will wait for hours for Janet to come home with the groceries. I think grocery day is her favorite day. I've just about given up on hearing anything about Viasat-3 press credentials. Still no news today.

I'm tired. I did a lot of chores today that I've been trying to avoid. I knew that bulky trash pickup was this week, so I raked leaves right after breakfast. It's a good thing I started early because the trash trucks came today. I thought they were coming tomorrow. I hadn't finished by the time the trucks arrived but at least three big bags of leaves got hauled away. I guess I'll get the rest of the leaves next month.

Dawn wore her No Flap Ear Wrap on our early walk this morning. We hope this helps the hematoma on her ear to heal. I wasn't aware of how often she shakes her head. She does this a lot when she's outside. The device really does a good job of keeping her ears in place and Dawn doesn't seem to mind wearing it. Lets hope it works.

It was really warm today. I wore shorts and a t-shirt on my long walk and was still hot. By mid-afternoon it got up to over 80 degrees. This isn't like February at all. Even though the weather was nice, I was fairly slow this morning. This was probably because I had already been raking leaves for over an hour. I just don't have as much energy as I used to. I still managed to walk six miles. It just took me a little longer. I always try to convince myself that it's better to go slow than to quit, even though on many days I'd much rather just take a long nap.

With 80 degree weather I knew the roof would be dry, so I managed to lug the big bucket of Armor Flex silicon up on the roof and used it to patch the holes where the coating had torn. There was only about one gallon of liquid silicon left in the bucket, but it was enough to fill most of the bare areas. This stuff is so old now that I'm not even sure if it is good anymore. It's got to help though. I'll try to go up on the roof again tomorrow and see if the coating I applied dried properly. I hope this works because it's supposed to start raining again tomorrow. The roofing company still hasn't called me with their bid, but I'm not in any particular hurry to get started. I know the job is going to be expensive and the rainy season isn't over yet. I guess I can keep setting buckets under the leaks until Spring.

The Crew-6 launch got postponed until Monday. I doubt that this matters much to me, since I still haven't heard whether I've been credentialed or not. It's odd that I haven't been either accepted or rejected yet with the launch so close. Usually I would have heard something by now. Maybe this is a sign that I should just plan to skip this launch. There's a good chance that it's going to rain this weekend anyway and I don't want to leave Janet with a bunch of leak buckets to manage.

It's weird to have the air conditioner running in February, but at least the air conditioner is working fine. I've just about given up trying to predict this weather. I wouldn't be surprised if we're freezing again soon. I know we've still got a lot more rain to look forward to, but I hope it stays dry long enough for the silicon patches I applied today to dry. We'll see what happens tomorrow. I probably didn't fix the roof, but at least I got rid of some leaves today.

I think it's Winter now. It felt very cold when we took Dawn on her sunrise walk and then it got even colder as the day progressed. I've got plenty of sweaters and warm coats, but it does take a little longer to get dressed in the morning. At least we don't live up North. I can't believe the amount of snow they are getting in Buffalo.

I don't think I accomplished much today. After walking Dawn, I made the bed, ate my breakfast, and waited around the house for it to get warmer before taking my walk. That never happened. In fact the longer I waited, the colder it got. Eventually I put on two coats, got my warmest hat, and went walking. There aren't nearly as many cyclists and joggers on a cold day. People were still walking dogs though. A change in the weather doesn't stop a dog from needing to pee. The ducks and geese must have been hungry today. The group that stays near Sunset Bay were following people around waiting for a handout. I didn't have anything to give them and the geese weren't very happy about that. 

It's time to set out bulky trash again, so I reluctantly hauled a bunch of branches and logs the tree guy left behind out to the curb. These got left behind because I asked hime to cut down another small tree when he was here. This tree wasn't in his bid, which only included removing the larger tree that had fallen on the roof. He agreed to cut down the little dead tree for free, but refused to haul away the debris. It didn't make sense to me, but I wasn't in the mood to argue. Some of the logs seemed very heavy. I'm definitely not getting any stronger. I got the job done though. Ten years ago this task would have been a lot easier.

The house still feels cold, even though the furnace is running normally. This happens every winter because our house isn't insulated very well. We have way too much single pane glass. On a cold day you don't want to stand too close to the windows. The furnace is doing its best though. I bet the gas bill is going to be high next month.

Returning from a trip is always a bit of a let down. I enjoy being part of the space community when I'm down at Kennedy Space Center. These are good people. I'd probably be out there chasing rockets with them if I lived down there. I enjoy being a temporary part of the astronomy community when I'm out at McDonald Observatory too. Oddly I don't feel part of any community here in Dallas, although it is clearly a large city with plenty to do. Sometimes I wonder why I moved here in the first place, but the answer is very simple. There were and still are plenty of good, high paying jobs.

This week has gone quickly. It's hard to believe that it's already the weekend again. Next week is Thanksgiving and we still can't get reservations at our favorite restaurant. I guess there were no cancelations. I'd better start putting my grocery list together. I hope the car starts tomorrow morning. I forgot to warm it up this evening. I probably need to get the battery replaced while it is still under warranty.

Another very hot day. We got up early again and walked Dawn before sunrise. I guess we walk Dawn at dawn now. We saw quite a few other people taking their dogs on an early walk. It makes a lot of sense. During this heat wave, an hour before sunrise is the only time when conditions are even bearable. It's still really nice outside before sunrise. I think it was 78 degrees this morning. This doesn't last long, unfortunately. By 9 AM, it's all over for the day.

I learned my lesson yesterday about walking outside in the heat. Today I went back to the gym. Instead of just walking on the indoor track, I resumed the old workout routine I was doing before Covid restrictions closed the gym for a year. Wow. I am definitely out of shape. Evidently, a walk through the park isn't quite the same as lifting weights or putting in some time on the hand bicycle. I've got a lot of work to do. The sad thing is that I wasn't in that great shape a year ago. Now I'm even worse.

My arms are sore this evening which means I must have accomplished something this afternoon. I can't say that I enjoy going to the gym all that much, but it sure beats having a heatstroke. I have a feeling that I'll be back at the gym quite a bit this summer. June is never our hottest month. It's usually much worse here in July and August. I don't know where you'd go to avoid the heat this summer. Most of the Western states are even in worse shape than Texas. I read that it was 115 degrees in Las Vegas today. That's pretty hot.

I've just about given up on the idea of going to Florida for a launch this summer. School is out. Everyone is on vacation. And anything related to travel is much more expensive than it was a year ago. I wonder how long this collective urge to get out of the house will last? Maybe by this Fall vacation fever will have abated. The launches I'm most interested in are all getting postponed anyway, so perhaps it will all work out. I have no interest in fighting the crowds. Sooner or later things have to start getting back to normal.

Tomorrow I've got to haul all the dead Photinia trees I cut down out to the curb for the bulky trash trucks to pick up. There's still one dead tree left. Maybe I'll cut that one down tomorrow as well. It's depends on how hot it is. I'm surprised at how quickly we've gone from lush green grass to a bone dry yard. I'm going to have to start watering the yard again. Without water it won't take long for the grass and shrubs to wither and die. Unfortunately, if you water the grass a lot, your water bill skyrockets. I guess all the utility bills skyrocket in the summer. I hate to even think what next month's electric bill is going to look like.

Janet took Dawn to training class again this evening. She said Dawn did well and is becoming accustomed to this new activity. Dawn likes being around other dogs, so even if she never becomes an obedience star, the class will still be good for her. I can't decide whether to go watch her some evening or not. I have a feeling that Dawn probably does better in class without me around. I also have a feeling that if I was just sitting in a lawn chair watching the class, I'd get eaten alive by mosquitos.

I wonder what I used to do during the hot summer months? I doubt that I just sat inside and complained about the weather, but maybe I did. It's really hard to remember what I was doing ten years ago. Hopefully my interest in astronomy, dogs, and space will continue, so I'll have something to do ten years from now.
