Day 4987

The heat is relentless. It's even hot on our sunrise walks now. I just wonder how long this can continue. I keep looking at the weather app on my phone and all it shows are sunny days and triple digit temperatures. Everything is so dry that now were are getting fire hazard warnings in addition to the daily heat advisory warnings. Today there was an ozone warning as well. I guess things could be worse. There have been no tornado warnings in a long time and we certainly don't have to worry about flooding.

I followed my regular Sunday schedule today. We had a big breakfast and then I went mall walking. I've noticed that there are a lot more walkers lately. The mall is nice and cool and I think a lot of people have started coming before the stores open just to get out of the heat. I'm almost certain that they keep the mall cooler than most people's homes. We do pretty well maintaining temperatures inside our house at night and during the morning hours. By mid afternoon our system is struggling though. If you set the thermostat at 76 degrees the temperature is going to be 80 by dinnertime.

There was nothing new at the mall today. The auto show is still going on, but I have little interest in looking at cars. The car I'm driving now might end up being the last car I have. I don't drive much anymore and my current car is becoming a really low mileage vehicle for it's vintage. We'll see what happens though. I've learned that you can never take mechanical things for granted.

It kind of bothers me that I'm walking slower now. It took me longer than usual to do my five laps at the mall today. I'm slower at the gym as well. I think this heat has just drained all the energy out of me. Hopefully this will change when things get cooler. Right now very little captures my interest and all I want to do is sleep.

I started on the web project that I volunteered to help my neighbor with this afternoon. The files they sent me didn't match at all with what they said they wanted. This might be a little harder than I thought. Situations like this used to be a daily occurrence back when I made my living as a web designer. It all seems a bit strange now though. I'm glad I've officially retired.

Dawn still gets her Sunday outing, but it's way to hot for a second walk. We let her outside at the park for a few minutes so she could pee and then we headed straight for the ice cream store. They must have been having problems today, because the line at the drive through window moved a lot slower than usual. Our cones weren't as cold as they should have been either. Dawn didn't mind though. She loves ice cream.

On the way home we stopped at the vet so Dawn could get her Bordetella shot. Actually, she got a nasal spray today instead of a shot because she was already coughing. We don't think she has kennel cough, but she was due for a Bordetella shot in a few weeks anyway. There was a sign on the door of the vet today warning that there has been an outbreak of canine flu in the area. The symptoms of canine flu are very similar to what we are seeing with Dawn as well. The vet doesn't think Dawn has either kennel cough or canine flu. So what actually is going on here? We still don't know.

I don't expect very much to change tomorrow. I wish I could just hibernate like a bear until cooler weather arrived. This has definitely been a very strange summer.

Day 4722

I went to the storage warehouse today to get the gear we need for this years Santa Paws photos. Most of this equipment has seen better days, but I guess it will last one more year. I think Dalmatian Rescue has been doing this event for over ten years now. It seems like a long time. When I was going to my storage unit, I passed a guy who told me he hoped I had a good lock. He said his unit had just been broken into. I found this hard to believe since all the storage units are inside and monitored by cameras. That's the world we live in these day unfortunately. Janet said it would be a blessing if my unit got robbed. It was hard to argue with her. Most of the stuff in storage there is junk. I just have a hard time getting rid of things.

When I woke up this morning all the leaks had stopped. I emptied the last bucket and put it away. Finally life was back to normal. Three hours later I heard dripping water again. WTF? Is this ever going to end? I put a bucket back under the leak. After about four hours this recurring leak stopped again. I think I'll leave the bucket in place overnight just to play it safe. Janet thinks I should have already hired a roofer by now. I just can't find one that I like or trust. Once burned, twice shy I guess. I've replaced two roofs on this house already using companies recommended by people I respect. Neither of these roofs lasted very well. I hate to do this again, even though it is necessary. Residential roofers typically don't do a good job on flat roofs and commercial and industrial roofers think this job is too small for them.

At least the weather was nice today. We had a pleasant sunrise walk with Dawn this morning and then I went out walking again after breakfast. It's hard to dress for these walks. I'm always cold when I get started and hot by the time I return home. It's surprising how quickly the temperature rises when the sun is out. It was in the low thirties when we got up this morning and almost sixty by the time I finished my long walk. I saw one of the Bald Eagles again today. Nick and Nora appear to be here for the Winter.

My inbox was inundated with Cyber Monday ads today. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are really just the same thing. I deleted most of these messages without even looking at them. Even though I find electronic and camera gear tempting, I don't need anything. I'm not buying more gear this year. If I had stopped buying things I don't need years ago I probably wouldn't have any use for my storage warehouse. 

There is a bad strain of canine flu going around, so we're taking Dawn in for a flu shot tomorrow. You'd think a nurse could just give the shot and we would be on our way. Nope. We had to schedule a full vet appointment to get the shot. This of course make the shot a lot more expensive. Oh, well. It's too bad they don't have doggie Medicare. Dawn is an old dog.

It's time to put the Christmas tree up. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow. It seemed like last year the lights weren't working well. That probably means that they won't be working well this year either. We'll see how it goes.

I've completely lost track of what day it is. I woke up this morning thinking it was Saturday, but it's really just Wednesday. Most of the things that imposed a structure on my life are gone. When I was taking care of Dot toward the end of her life there was always something that needed to be done. Practically every minute needed to be accounted for. When work was busy, a host of deadlines imposed their own structure. Even Janet driving off to work every morning made the week seem orderly. Now it doesn't really matter what day it is. Maybe this is what retirement is like.

I'm not sure what comes next for me, but I can tell that Janet doesn't want to sit around the house all day. She can't wait until her doctors give her the OK to drive again. After today's visit to see the surgeon, we're one step closer to that goal. The doctors seem pleased at her progress and one of the drainage tubes was removed. When the drainage in the other tube decreases to 30 milliliters per day, it can be removed as well. The good news is that there is no sign of infection anywhere.

I can't decide whether Dash needs the canine flu immunization. Our vet would probably say yes, but I've read of several instances where dogs who got the shots ended up having seizures afterwards. Since Dash has problems with both epilepsy and idiopathic vestibular disease, I don't want to do anything that would give him another seizure. Dogs who participate in dog shows or go to dog parks frequently have the highest risk of influenza, but there is no guarantee that your dog is completely free from danger  even if you just stay at home. It's a tough choice, since the canine flu is pretty serious. I never get flu shots myself. The one time I did, I actually caught the flu. My solution for avoiding the flu is just to stay away from children.

Canine flu shots aren't the only think I'm having trouble making a decision about. Should I go see the August eclipse or not? When I first started reading about the upcoming eclipse, it was presented as a must see, once in a lifetime event. Lately, the tone of the articles I've been reading is changing. Eclipse day is projected to be a traffic nightmare of epic proportions with millions of people converging on the totality zone without much of a plan. Now, people are being told to bring extra food and even extra gasoline. Expect to be stranded on the highway if you aren't in place several days ahead of time, they say. This doesn't sound like fun at all. Totality is only two minutes long. I'm not sure being stranded on a crowded freeway for hours is worth those two minutes. There's a 40% chance it's going to be cloudy anyway. All this being said, I'd still love to see a total eclipse.

There's still time to decide. I'll ask Dash's vet about the immunization shots and I'll keep checking airfares to the eclipse zone. In the mean time, there are more mundane things that need to be done. I still need to get my passport renewed and the back yard desperately needs new St. Augustine grass. One of my writing clients said they'd have some more assignments soon, but I'm not counting on much work these days. That ship has sailed.

It's weird to have so much time on my hands. When I have lots of time, I have no money and when I have lots of money, I have no time. That's life, I guess. At least Janet is getting better. That's the important thing right now.
