Day 4982

It was surprisingly cool this morning. When we left the house to take our sunrise walk it was only 75 degrees. It was so pleasant outside that I thought seriously about walking in the park later in the day. Then the sun came up. As soon as the sun hit my face I knew this illusion of Fall wasn't going to last long.

I didn't do much today. I was supposed to hear whether I got accepted to the OSIRIS-REx sample return event at John Space Center, but nothing came in the mail. I'm getting closer to attempting to repair the damaged sheetrock in the living room ceiling myself, but it's still looking like a task to avoid. It's kind of amazing that the days still go quickly. On days like this it feels like I do literally nothing at all.

Of course I still make the bed, have my shredded wheat and fruit for breakfast and go to the gym. These things seem automatic now. At many points during the day I find myself thinking "didn't I just do this yesterday." Maybe it was always this way. Nostalgia is kind of tricky. I think we all have a way of making the past seem more exciting than it actually was.

At the gym everyone walks around the indoor track clockwise on odd days and counterclockwise on even days. This has always seemed strange to me but I've never questioned it. Wouldn't it be easier to just keep the direction the same? I've gotten in the habit of adding up the distance I've traveled in my head. I'm getting pretty good at this, but still lose count of my laps from time to time. I sometimes lose count of how many free throws I've completed on the basketball court as well. I ought to pay more attention to what the trainers are doing. I could probably pick up some good tips without having to hire a trainer myself. There are lots of televisions at the gym. When I'm going clockwise on the track I watch what's happening on the Food Network. When I'm going counterclockwise I watch what happening on Animal Planet. It's all pretty boring. I think I just do this because I'm addicted to getting my Fitbit steps.

When I come home I let Dawn outside to pee and then I make a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch. Occasionally I wonder why I'm not doing more. I always hear people talks about how they are passionate about this or that. I've never felt this way. Hey, dispassionate is a fine word that doesn't get used a lot. Isn't being calm, rational, and impartial a good thing?

I think it is kind of weird that I'm running out of things to say at the exact same time as I'm approaching my blogging goal. Did I know this was going to happen all those years ago? I often wonder why I picked 5000 days in the first place? Maybe this was just meant to be. The way I'm feeling now, I don't think I could possible keep writing for 6000 days.

I think it's still going to be cooler tomorrow. That's a good thing. Maybe Dawn will finally get to go to her training class again. For the past month it has been too hot for Dawn to go to the Wednesday evening class. We'll see what happens. I'm not expecting any surprises.

Day 4936

I've got to start getting more sleep. After finishing my blog post I usually watch TV in bed for a while. I immediately fall asleep and don't wake up again until after nmidnight. I realize that I still have to run the dishwasher, empty the dehumidifier, brush my teeth, and get ready for bed. By the time I'm actually ready for sleep it is often 1 AM. We get up early too, so we can walk Dawn before it gets hot. There's probably an easy solution to this problem. I just need to write my blog post earlier. Easier said than done though. I'm a creature of habit and I've been doing this for a long time. I'm actually kind of glad that my blogging days are winding to a close. I'm running out of things to say.

It certainly doesn't help matters that every day this summer has been exactly the same. Today was no exception. We got up, took Dawn on her sunrise walk, looked for rabbits and critters along the way, and then returned home for breakfast. I made the bed, ate my shredded wheat and fruit, listened to the morning news for a while, and checked my messages before going to the gym.

My routine at the gym was the same as yesterday as well. It's been the same all week. I walk three miles at a brisk pace on the indoor track and then shoot free throws on the basketball court for a while before heading home again. I always briefly think about doing more but seldom do. An hour and a half at the gym is usually enough for me.

The first thing I do when I return home is let Dawn outside to pee. Lately she doesn't pee, but just rolls in the grass instead. So much for that bath we gave her yesterday. Dawn like to lie out in the sun but I have to be careful that she doesn't stay out too long. I don't think Dawn realizes how dangerous this heat can be.

I never used to eat lunch, but I've been having a toasted ham sandwich lately. I melt some sharp cheddar cheese on the toasted bread and then put thin strips of ham on top. I'll usually drink a can of sparkling water with the sandwich. It's a tasty little lunch and I try to eat a little less for dinner to compensate. My weight has remained constant for years and I don't want that to change.

In the winter I might start on some sort of project in the afternoon, but this summer it is just too hot. I don't feel like doing anything and usually end up taking a nap. Probably I actually get plenty of sleep. It's just spread out throughout the day. I've noticed that Dawn often stays on the bed with me now when I take an afternoon nap. That's progress I guess.

Today is Dawn's favorite day. It's always grocery day on Friday and Dawn waits for Janet to return for at least an hour before she arrives with the groceries. Putting the groceries away seems to be a very big deal for Dawn. She gets very excited and follows Janet around until everything is in it's place. Oddly, she shows no interest at all when I do my own grocery shopping on Saturday.

Tomorrow's schedule will be a little different since I do my grocery shopping in the morning. Dawn will still get a sunrise walk. I'll go to the gym. And I'll end the day with a blog post. Pretty much the same thing as today. It's always Groundhog Day around here.

Day 4851

It felt like Winter again today. How is this even possible? A week ago it was 90 degrees outside and now I'm wearing my down jacket and gloves again. This month every day brings something new. You never know what to expect. I'll take the cold over rain any day though. I've got plenty of warm coats.

The launch I applied for yesterday has already been postponed. Something mechanically is wrong with the rocket and a new launch date has not been announced yet. This is why it is so hard to plan these trips to Kennedy Space Center. Even when I do manage to secure press credentials, the launch itself is never certain. I've made several trips where the launch was canceled after I arrived and I ended up seeing nothing. Much more common is a one day delay. I've experienced a lot of those. You've got to stay flexible and hope you can extend all your reservations.

Dawn enjoyed her early walk this morning, but I can't says the same for my long walk later in the day. I waited a while to leave the house, hoping it would get warmer, but it never did. I guess today wasn't any colder than your average day in early January, but this is April. Winter is supposed to be over by mid April. I really doubt that we will get another hard freeze, but forty-five degrees with a brisk wind still feels like Winter.

After I returned from my chilly long walk, I basically did nothing for the rest of the day. Janet likes to watch movies, but I rarely do. I haven't picked up a book in a while either. Sometimes I test cameras and other equipment. Other times I do a load of laundry. Mostly I just waste time on the Internet. I catch up on the day's news on Google and check my Facebook feed. Neither of these activities gives me a lot of faith in the direction the world is headed. It's probably not surprising that I've spent a lot of time messing with the Polaris star tracker. It has been challenging to master this device since there is no instruction manual and it is still potentially useful in the future. It keeps me busy. The star tracker seems to have replaced the interest I once had for mechanical watches.

I wonder how much longer I can keep using this computer. It's a Mid 2010 27-inch iMac and can't be updated anymore. Almost every day I discover something new that isn't working the way it used to. The hardware seems to work fine, but the Apple operating system, browsers, and even mail have changed a lot. Website developers have changed the way they code things and I frequently find that windows won't open or pages won't scroll properly. Sometimes my WiFi connection disappears completely and I have to reboot the computer to restore it. Oddly I still have no desire to replace the computer. I liked the way the Internet and computers were in 2010. The bulky old Mac desktops I used before 2010 were even better. I had one with four hard drives, two Apple superdrives, and a modded CPU that was great. I think I detect a theme here. I just don't like change.

I think Dawn has a hard time with change as well. She spent so many years as a breeding dog in a puppy mill run by two old men that I'm probably always going to seem like a kennel attendant to her. In her mind Janet will always be the person who rescued her and I am Janet's assistant. I'm good for walks and fixing dinner, but she will never completely trust me. It's a shame that she doesn't trust me since we spend most of the day together in the house. Dawn has her room in the bedroom and I have mine in the office. She will follow me out to the back yard when she needs to pee and she always eats the meals I fix, but I can see a huge difference as soon as Janet comes home. She instantly becomes a happy dog again.

Day 4831

It was clear and cold this morning. This always seems to happen in March. It gets warm so everything starts to grow and then we get a late freeze and have to start over again. It was well above freezing this morning, but it looks like we might get that late freeze later this week. At least there is no more rain for a while. So far there have been no leaks in the house after yesterday's storm. Maybe I got lucky. I haven't gone up on the roof to investigate yet. I'll probably regret that decision later.

Dawn woke us up during the middle of the night and needed to go outside and pee. The drugs she's been taking are making her drink more water. She seems to be feeling better now that we've resumed the Rimadyl. The vet said she could continue taking it for another week and then we should slowly start weaning her off the drug. We don't have a long term solution yet. Maybe there isn't one.

I had to pick up some prescriptions today and the pharmacy doesn't seem to like GoodRx anymore. They used to always check and see if the GoodRx price was lower than my Part-D health plan. Now they say that this is too much trouble. I have to show them the GoodRx coupon for the drug on my phone and wait fifteen minutes wandering around the store while they refigure the price. "Can't we just do this the way we used to," I asked the pharmacist? Nope. They can't or won't use GoodRx as my default payment method. So it goes. Nothing is easy anymore.

I walked later in the day today, hoping that it would warm up. It didn't. I dressed warmly and had a nice walk, but my feet hurt again. I should probably throw away my old Hoka shoes and start wearing the new pair, but I keep thinking that I can get a few more months out of them. Truthfully, the shoes probably don't make much difference. I've got osteoarthritis and I don't want to start taking pain pills for minor aches and pains.

I wasted a lot of time today watching Dawn to make sure she didn't try to jump off the bed. She's happy sleeping on the bed and I hate to gate her in a hallway. I didn't really have any plans anyway. My day usually consists of eating and walking lately. All I really did today was go to the pharmacy. I'm sure the long walks are beneficial, but I need to add a few more things to my daily routine. The trips to Kennedy Space Center are few and far between and I'm not sure that I will ever return to McDonald Observatory. Age is catching up with me and I hate that long drive.

Janet did her grocery shopping today and I'll do mine tomorrow. We both think that there's been a sea change since the pandemic. Stores always seem to be out of things these days and it's a hassle to find what you need. I think all businesses are understaffed too. There aren't as many employees in the stores now and the ones who are working seem grumpy. At any rate, grocery shopping takes more time now, costs more, and is definitely less satisfying.

I'm having Internet problems again. I can't even access my own domains. I hate to call my hosting company because that's usually just an exercise in frustration. I think I'll just post this and go to bed. So many things are just random these days. Probably everything will be working fine in the morning.

Day 4760

These uneventful days are even becoming too uneventful for me. I'm very comfortable with boredom, but this is getting ridiculous. Every day is exactly the same. I really can't blame anyone but myself. I've got the time to do practically anything. I just don't have the desire. I'm reluctant to even get in the car and drive across town these days. A predictable routine close to home is much more desirable.

It's not a bad routine when you think about it. I get plenty of sleep when you count naps. I eat healthy meals that I actually enjoy. I certainly get plenty of exercise. Just so I don't get too comfortable in my little cocoon, I try to travel to Kennedy Space Center every couple of months and cover a launch. I'm not a real journalist, but my articles do get published.

I used to spend a lot of time having lunch with people. A lot of this was just maintaining business contacts, but I suppose it was fun as well. I do remember some lively discussions. I don't do this anymore. I keep up with people by scrolling through my Facebook feed every morning. Occasionally I'll hit the like button but that's about as engaged as I get. If you're not on Facebook, I've probably forgotten your name.

Is this healthy? Who's to say. I certainly feel more balanced and content than I did during the ad agency days when life was a cacophony of ambition and conflict. I'm no Henry David Thoreau, but there is a beauty in solitude. To be alone with your thoughts is fairly rewarding when you are actually thinking.

So there you have it. I get up every morning and take an early walk with Janet and Dawn. I eat my bowl of shredded wheat and do a few chores around the house. My long walk is almost always the same, but I'm never thinking the same things. I daydream a lot. These conversations with myself feel more rewarding than the lunchtime arguments I used to have with friends over a bowl of Pad Thai.

I do wish my feet didn't hurt. I vaguely remember four day hikes I used to take in the summer when I lived in Aspen. I couldn't do that anymore. Six miles a day on very familiar trails is plenty. I used to take more pictures, but I think I've photographed everything in the park by now. Sometimes I'll just use an old photo for the blog when I see something on my walk that I've already photographed. One year I decided that I was going to learn the names of every tree and flower in the park. I brought home leaves and photographed flowers and then looked them up in books. There were hundreds of different species. It was interesting for a while, but I've already forgotten the names of a lot of the plants I spent so long trying to identify. Now I just count ducks.

It's probably a blessing that Dawn doesn't want to walk with me. I used to walk our other Dalmatians twice a day and unpredictable things would happen. It was stressful. Over the years several dogs got stung by bees or cut by broken glass. Dot ripped out a nail when thunder scared her and she started running back home. Dash got out of his harness once and I was afraid he was going to run away. Later Dash was almost killed when he was attacked by a very aggressive dog in the neighborhood. A stranger drove Dash and I to the vet and it took him months to fully recover. This is still one of my very worst memories. I try my best to avoid conflict and danger but you never really know what's going to happen next. I really hope my life stays uneventful.

Day 4740

I often have trouble remembering what day it is. It's understandable. I do the same things every day. I get up when Janets says "We'll be walking in twenty minutes." I dress warmly for these early walks and then change back into indoor clothes as soon as we return. I make the bed and then eat my breakfast when Janet and Dawn are finished in the kitchen. I fix my coffee and have a bowl of shredded wheat with fruit. Lately the fruit of choice is strawberries, but I enjoy peaches in the summer. I've tried blackberries, blueberries and raspberries, but didn't like those as much. I've gone through periods when I've fixed myself an omlette, made french toast, or eaten a grapefruit. I even got my special omlette recipe featured in a cookbook once. Now shredded wheat seems to do the trick. They have to be mini-wheats without a sugar coating though. I don't like the old fashioned full sized shredded wheat either.

I usually watch television while I'm eating breakfast. This does little to remind me what day it is. I'm a channel surfer and find all the channels equally bad. Fox is the pillow guy every five minutes. MSNBC is non-stop January 6. CNN is the Ukraine channel. Business is looking up on CNBC. A recession is just around the corner on Fox Business. I only watch the local channels if there is a tornado warning. It's all basically worthless, but it's better than eating in silence.

I try to wait until it warms up a bit before I take my long walk, but usually I get bored and leave right after I check my e-mail for messages. When I was working there were a lot of messages. Now my inbox is mostly spam. Walking is even more boring than watching cable news during breakfast, but I've convinced myself that I'm doing this for my health. I'm sure the long walks do some good, but I'm a long way from becoming a gym rat. I still walk pretty slow and occasionally fat people pass me on the trails.

To amuse myself I try to keep track of what the local birds and waterfowl are doing. There is a lot of activity. We've got a colony of very noisy green monk parakeets. There are tons of mallards, coots, and ruddy ducks. Occasionally I will see some very colorful wood ducks. A large group of American White Pelicans spend the Winter at the lake along with an even larger group of Double Crested Cormorants. I frequently hear owls but rarely see them. I do see lots of Great Egrets, Cattle Egrets, and Blue Herons. Hawks are pretty common too. I always see the five domestic geese and the three Muscovy ducks near Sunset Bay because they are always looking for handouts from the people who feed them. Of course, now we've got two Bald Eagles as well. Everyone is interested in the eagles.

Monday is Dawn's favorite day because that's when Janet does her grocery shopping. Grocery day is a big deal for  Dawn. She's waiting at the front door at least an hour before Janet returns. For some reason Dawn seems to get great pleasure watching all the groceries being put away. She certainly knows what food is. I think her favorite words are turkey and bacon.

On slow days I recharge batteries. That's what I did today. Phones, laptops, recorders, cameras and much more all rely on batteries. These batteries go dead whether you use the equipment or not. It seems like I'm always recharging or replacing batteries. This is probably why I will never buy an electric car. Batteries are a giant pain. They're expensive, they don't last long enough, and they perform poorly in cold weather. I've had to replace the lawn mower batteries several times because I forgot to bring the battery pack inside during cold weather. These batteries are inside now because the temperature will dip below freezing soon.

Day 4703

Not a lot was accomplished today. After the time change, we're taking our sunrise walks in daylight again. The ground was soggy, but it looks like the rain is over for a while. I think Dawn is still running on Daylight Savings Time. She's ready to get up earlier in the morning and wants her dinner earlier as well. I'm fine with the time change. I didn't really like walking in the dark.

I took my long walk right after breakfast this morning because I wanted to take advantage of the cooler weather. I didn't see the eagles today, but the muscovy ducks and our resident geese were waiting for me. I probably should have gone back to the gym. These walks are starting to get boring again.

After I returned to the house, I wrote a letter to my sister and took it to the post office on my way to pick up a prescription at the pharmacy. I needed to reschedule a doctor's appointment because of the changing Artemis launch schedule and I checked with the urologist about my test results. I stayed busy, but it didn't really feel like I was accomplishing anything. The elephant in the room is still Hurricane Nicole. Am I going to have to change my travel plans again?

I've been watching the weather and it's still uncertain whether Hurricane Nicole is going to do any damage at Kennedy Space Center. It still doesn't seem like a good idea to leave the rocket out on the pad during a hurricane, but what do I know? I hope everything gets resolved soon. I really hate continually changing my hotel and airline reservations.

Tomorrow a carpenter is coming over to the house to take a look at the rotted wood on the fascia of our flat roof. Hopefully he will tell me that this is an easy fix and I can tell him to go ahead with the repairs. This is one of the things I really need to get done soon. You can't have your house falling down around you. Maybe when I get this repair completed, I can finally start thinking about cameras and lenses again. I've had a lot of unexpected expenses this Fall. It's much more enjoyable to spend your money on things you don't really need.

Janet said that Dawn did well in training class tonight. She didn't win any ribbons this week, but she's in the advanced class now. This dog has more regular activities than I do. That's OK though. I'm not trying to win any ribbons.

Day 4603

Such a long, hot summer. Every day is more or less the same. We get up and take Dawn on a sunrise walk. I make the bed and then eat breakfast. It's always shredded wheat topped with peaches and strawberries. I do the breakfast dishes by hand even though we just got a new dishwasher. I check my messages on the computer, putter around the house for a little while, and then go to the gym. It's kind of a boring routine, but it's better than no routine at all.

My routine at the gym seldom varies either. If nobody is using the basketball court, I always try to shoot 25 free throws before taking my walk on the indoor track. I used to just try to get 15 baskets, but I'm getting a little better. The direction people walk or run on the track changes every day, so I usually have to check and see if it is an odd or even day. It takes fourteen trips around the track to walk a mile. I always walk two miles and occasionally I walk three. Often I go home after I finish walking, but sometimes I stay and work with free weights for a while. The same people seem to be at the gym every day. I guess I'm becoming one of them.

As soon as I get home I let Dawn out to pee. Usually she likes to lounge in the grass for a while, but lately she wants to go right back inside. It is just too hot to lounge in the sun. If I'm hungry I'll fix myself a sandwich, but I don't always eat lunch. Afternoons are when I miss being employed. I used to always have writing jobs to keep me busy. Now there is very little that captures my attention.

Today I upgraded the firmware on the star tracker again. I'm always a little apprehensive when doing this, but the tracker still works. I point the tracker at various planets and galaxies using the app on my phone, but all I get are pictures of my office ceiling. I seldom take the tracker outside. Again, it is just too hot. I am getting better at using the thing though. I'm pretty sure it is pointed where it is supposed to be pointing and occasionally check for accuracy using other astronomy apps on my phone.

Dawn is still not wild about sharing the bed with me, but she doesn't get up and leave the room when I take an afternoon nap these days. I guess that's progress. Dash used to follow me around the house all day long. Dawn follows Janet around and tries her best to ignore me when I'm home alone with her. I doubt that this will ever change. Dawn is just not comfortable around men.

I still wish that NASA would hurry up with a schedule for the Artemis-1 launch. I'll feel more comfortable when I know I don't have to change my airline reservations. I got a notice today that I could apply to attend the next crewed launch to the ISS. I think I'll pass on the Crew-5 mission though. I have a feeling that the Artemis launch will be my last trip to Florida this year.

I've got a dentist appointment tomorrow. Hopefully I don't have any cavities. It doesn't seem like six months since I've been to the dentist, but time flies when you are doing nothing.

Day 4555

It was a very slow day. I mostly thought about things I needed to do, but didn't get around to doing many of them. The daily routine is pretty familiar by now. We get up and take Dawn on her sunrise walk. I make the bed while Janet and Dawn are eating breakfast and then I go eat my own breakfast. Out of habit I turn on the computer after breakfast and check my e-mail. I only get one or two important messages a month these days. Since the temperature is getting hotter, I'm making a real effort to start my long walk before 9 AM. The weather is still nice this early, but by the time I return at 11 AM it is already oppressively hot.

There are still a lot of wildflowers in the park, but most of the animals are in hiding. It's just too hot. I haven't even seen many ducks lately. What I do see is a lot of construction activity. The new concrete trail that they are building is almost completed. The construction company must have a penalty clause in their contract because activity has increased a lot lately. I think the whole project is supposed to be completed by the end of June.

I still haven't run the new dishwasher yet, but I did read the instruction manual today. This thing is way too complicated. If you hold certain buttons for three seconds a sub-menu appears with even further choices. I think I liked the simple round dial on the old dishwasher better. There were just three settings: heavy wash, normal wash, and light wash. You turned the dial to the setting you wanted and that was it. I'll try this thing tonight and we'll see how it goes. It will be interesting to see if the dishes actually get dry. I wish they'd used an electric heating coil to dry the dishes instead of using this "dynamic drying" feature which is just marketing hype for no drying at all. It's easy to accidentally turn the dishwasher on by leaning against it as well. I guess I shouldn't complain. This was the only model that would fit under our kitchen counter.

I found a small hole in the screen wire side of the atrium and sealed it today. Hopefully I sealed the rat out instead of sealing it in. I think it is gone because I haven't seen it in over a week. When I removed the Havahart trap from the atrium I noticed that some of the cheese had been eaten. The clever rat had figured out how to eat the cheese without setting off the trap.

I installed the latest star tracker app on my phone, but didn't have the nerve to upgrade the firmware on the device and test it again. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow. Just like with my phone, watch, and computers, you eventually have to install the upgrades. It's frustrating how often upgrades actually make things worse though. If you ignore the upgrades, your machine basically isn't supported anymore. Since I run an older operating system on my main computer, my browser crashes a lot more than it should. I can't run the latest browsers though because they are linked to the latest operating systems.

Dawn is still leaving the room whenever I try to take a nap with her during the day. She just seems nervous whenever Janet isn't in the house. This is discouraging, but I don't think this behavior is going to change. I don't think she's going to be happy when Janet goes on vacation, but as long as I can keep her eating and taking her meds, we'll be OK.

I'm already tired of summer and it's just getting started. We've got a long way to go. It's already too hot to mow the grass or do yard work. The air conditioner is struggling to keep the house as cold as we like. Unfortunately I've already used up my travel budget for the year, so I'm stuck here until things start to cool down again. Hopefully nothing else breaks this summer. I'd much rather buy a new camera than another major appliance.

Day 4453

What was I thinking when I convinced myself that I could post something interesting for 5000 days? There are a lot of days where nothing interesting happens at all. I really don't have a lot of wisdom to share. Each morning I reluctantly get up. We take Dawn on a morning walk. I come home and make the bed and then I eat breakfast. Breakfast is the only time I watch television during the day. I wonder why I continue to do this because the news is universally dismal. Watching the morning news doesn't give you a lot of faith in humanity. After breakfast I turn on the computer and check my e-mail. The mail is almost entirely spam these days. I did get a message from the Space Force this morning reminding me to reapply for 2022 press credentials. I'll do that tomorrow. Sometimes I take my long walk in the morning and other times I wait until the afternoon. It all depends on the weather and how my feet are feeling.

I almost always walk the same route. This route has become so familiar to me that I could probably do it with my eyes closed. The long walk is a little over four and a half miles. With Dawn's shorter walks, this give me a total of at least six miles every day. Lately I've enjoyed watching the renovations that are taking place to the main trail that circles the lake. The work is pretty impressive. If only they built our city's roads this well. There are a few ducks and geese I see every day. I haven't given them names yet, but maybe I should. Two of the resident geese have disappeared and I haven't seen the Muscovy Ducks for a while. Whenever I start thinking that these birds might have died, they suddenly reappear. Usually by this time of year I start seeing wildflowers. Not this year. I've seen nothing so far, which is kind of odd.

My seasonal allergies are so bad this year that they actually help take my mind off my feet. The allergies are so pervasive that I occasionally think that this might be some strange undocumented Covid symptom. I've always tested negative though so I suspect that this is just is just a bad case of ordinary Hay Fever. I shouldn't complain about things like this because I know so many people who are dealing with far worse. It is irritating though to have a continual runny nose.

I'm glad to see that the fundraiser for the puppy mill Dalmatians appears to be going well. With this kind of support, it looks like we will reach our goal. I wonder what the dogs think about their new life. They are all scared right now, but it won't take them long to realize that their lives have dramatically improved. These dogs are all going to get really good homes.

I have mixed feelings about the war in Ukraine. I really think the United States should stop getting involved in foreign wars while at the same time wondering why we aren't doing more to help the Ukrainians. There is an impressive amount of unity among the Western nations. You'd think that with everybody on the same page we could do a lot more to stop Putin. What do you do in a situation like this? You can't let Putin get away with anything he wants. At the same time you don't want to start a nuclear war. I'm glad I'm not making the decisions. I have a feeling that it is a no win situation.

Janet's trip is getting closer and I still haven't won Dawn over yet. This will be interesting. Dawn tolerates me but I don't think she trusts me. This is understandable considering what she went through at the puppy mill, but I still wish I could convince her that I'm OK. I do think I'm making progress, but Dawn is not a young dog. Do I have time? At any rate, I've got my work cut out for me while Janet is on vacation.

Day 4395

I didn't accomplish much today. The weather was warmer, but it still felt really cold on our morning walk with Dawn. Without a plan for the day, I just followed my regular routine. I make the bed. Get dressed. Walk Dawn. Eat breakfast. Check my e-mail. Take my long walk. And then try to find some project to eat up the rest of the day.

This week my project has been trying to get the star tracker to work. Still trying. The new cable I bought at the Apple Store yesterday did nothing. I guess the cable did work, but the camera it was attached to still refused to connect to the tracker. The tracker itself works fine. I just can't attach any of my cameras to it. It's looking like I might have to buy a new camera body that's on the approved list. Lots of cameras are on this list. Just not mine. Maybe I can find a used camera that's on the list. I just want to get this thing working. It's not like I'll be using it all the time. Maybe I should have paid more attention to the approved list before I bought this thing.

My feet didn't hurt as much today on my long walk. Maybe the discomfort does have something to do with the weather. Today was a low humidity day. It seems like things are worse on high humidity days, but I haven't really been keeping track. I don't know if keeping track of the weather would make much of a difference. I still need to keep walking and I think I'm already wearing the best shoes I can find. Maybe I just complain too much. The fact that I'm able to keep walking probably indicates that the pain isn't quite as bad as I think.

When my efforts to get the star tracker working proved futile, I watched the latest episode of The Expanse. Basically the show is just a Western in space. Now that I think of it, most science fiction series are just Westerns in space. I still like the show, even though I've forgotten how it all began. I guess all the loose ends will be pulled together soon. After a few more episodes, the series will be over for good.

I'm starting to have second thoughts about going back to the observatory. I almost fell the last time I was out there and my sense of balance seems to be getting worse. I'd really hate to take a bad fall out there. There are no good medical facilities in the area. I should probably take one of those balance classes for seniors at my gym. Balance is definitely something you can work on. I've always been reluctant to take a seniors class. At least when I'm walking alone in the park I can still feel young in my own mind.

Maybe I'll take the star tracker down to a local camera store tomorrow and try it out with some different cameras. Something is bound to work. Some of the cameras on the approved list are older, so maybe I could find a used approved camera fairly cheap.  I don't know why I've become so obsessed with this thing. I've already got another star tracker. The Polaris is completely automated though and is supposed to be able to find celestial objects on its own and automatically track them using an app on your phone. You can also us it to create panoramas, time-lapse shots, and many other things. I think you can also set it to automatically follow a person in the frame while you are making movies. This would be a pretty cool gizmo if it worked.

I haven't heard much about Artemis 1 lately. I kind of hope the launch keeps getting postponed until Covid is over. Covid restrictions have really taken the fun out of travel. There is a big star party in West Texas later this Spring, but after reading the multi-page list of new Covid rules I immediately said never mind. Maybe next year. I think people overestimate their ability to stop a virus. It's a virus. We haven't even figured out how to stop the common cold yet.

Day 4304

Not a lot happened today. I slowly and methodically went through my daily routine, but I was still left with a lot of time on my hands. I should use days like these to do something significant, but I seldom do. Sometimes I think of things to do around the house while eating breakfast. If I don't immediately talk myself out of the task because it is too messy or too hard, the desire is usually gone by the time I finish my long walk. Even on a nice day, walking six miles can be a little tiring.

I paid some bills and answered a few e-mails this morning, but that didn't take up as much time as I'd hoped. The weather was nice and I really had no excuse not to finish the weeding I'd started in the backyard. I'm still not finished, but the white gravel pathways are looking much nicer now. Since I'm having trouble with my knees, I did most of the weeding bending over at the waist. I'm sure this wasn't good for my back. From time to time I'd sit down and rest, wondering why I had even started doing something like this. I guess it's better than being up on the roof. The yard does look better now, although you wouldn't notice anything special unless you'd seen how bad it was before.

The November issue of SpaceFlight Magazine must have gone to press because I got a message this morning asking if I wanted author copies. Sure. I always want author copies. Without a physical copy of the magazine to hold in my hands, it's easy to forget that I've written anything. I hope this issue doesn't take eight months to get here like the February issue. It might though. Covid might be waning in the UK, but now nobody seems to be able to get gas for their cars.

I wonder if there is a limit to how many callers I can block on my phone. I seem to add a few more to the blocked list every single day. Don't spammers and telemarketers know that almost nobody answers their phone anymore unless they recognize the number. Somebody is putting a whole lot of energy into this. Why don't they just get a real job? I don't understand people at all. Way too many will put more time and energy into cheating someone than they ever would into doing something decent. People are terrible. I almost feel sorry for Mark Zuckerberg. It's easy to criticize Facebook when the real problem is the people who use it.

If the weather stays nice I really need to get up on the roof and clean away the leaves and debris so I can look for torn spots in the elastomer. I need to do my best to get the roof sealed again before Winter arrives. In the Summer water will evaporate after a rain. In the Winter it just stays there forever. One thing I've learned about water is that if it sits long enough, it will eventually find a way in the house. I wish there was a way to even out the low spots where water collects. In my mind there ought to be a product that you could pour into the low spots where it would harden to level the roof out so it would drain properly. I ask every roofer I talk to about this imaginary product, but it apparently doesn't exist.

The storage warehouse raised my rent again. They do this every year. I could probably save money by going back to the old storage warehouse as a new customer. It's so much trouble to move everything though. A better solution would be to just get rid of all the stuff I'm storing. What am I storing it for? At some point "too nice to throw away" doesn't make sense anymore. 80% of the stuff  I'm storing will never be used again. Oh, well. One more thing to worry about in the future.

I hope that tomorrow is more interesting than today. I guess that's up to me though.

Day 4220

You can probably skip this post because nothing really happened today. I followed the usual summer routine. Janet gives me a ten minute warning when it's time to get up for Dawn's morning walk. I hate to get up and wish I could sleep longer, but the walk is always nice. Dawn really enjoys these sunrise walks and all the hesitancy she showed several months ago is gone. Our route varies from day to day, but we always end up walking about one mile.

After I make the bed, I fix my morning smoothie. The recipe never varies. I combine a little half and half with two raw eggs, three heaping tablespoons of uncooked oatmeal, some collagen power, lots of strawberries and blueberries, a whole peach, a banana, a little cinnamon, some turmeric, a scoop of vanilla ice-cream, and a cup of crushed ice. This makes quite a bit, so it takes a while to drink it all. This is my big meal of the day. I usually eat a light dinner.

After breakfast I check the mail, which never arrives this early. I'm lucky if the postman delivers the mail at all. I turn on the computer and prepare for work. There isn't any work of course, since I am retired. I look through the mountain of spam that arrived overnight just in case there might be a real message. There seldom is. I look at Facebook and say Happy Birthday to whoever happens to have a birthday that day. I check the Lab Padre live feed to see what is happening with Starship down at Boca Chica. There is really no need for me to turn on the computer at all.

I need to check on Dawn more frequently now to make sure she is not licking or biting at her paws. We have her wear some socks that protect her paws now. They fall of a lot, but they seem to be working. Hopefully the antibiotics she's taking for her urinary tract infection will help clear up some of the redness as well. Since most of the paw licking occurs at night when we are asleep, we just hope that the socks stay on.

I called the company where I ordered the replacement foam for my camera case this morning. My first order got destroyed by the post office. I reordered the foam inserts again over a week ago and they still haven't shipped. Somehow I imagined that someone would just take these foam inserts off a warehouse shelf and put them in the mail. Nope. A guy in Ohio cuts them individually by hand. He said that there isn't enough demand for the foam that fits older Zero Halliburton cases so he doesn't keep an inventory. For some reason he was behind because it was raining a lot. Oh, well. At least I know now. It's not like I actually need the camera case. I haven't used the old Nikon cameras in years.

I always need to decide whether to walk in the park or go to the gym. I was hoping for some cloud cover and a cool breeze, but it wasn't meant to be. I went to the gym again. The same people seem to be at the gym every day. It is a small group at 3 PM. I found a machine today that allowed my to stretch my arms above my head. The arm with the bad shoulder is very weak, so I couldn't add many weights to the machine. Maybe if I keep using this, it will give me some more mobility. The idea is to sit on a bench and grab a bar above your head and then pull the bar down while raising some weights attached to a cable. I can't raise my right arm above my head on my own, but this machine pulls it up. We'll see if this helps. I'd like to have a little more mobility with this shoulder.

I've been hearing thunder this evening, but it only rained for a few minutes. I don't think this is enough to trigger the leak. Maybe I should put a bucket out just in case.

Day 4172

Some days I just stare at the screen and wonder what to write about. I don't like to write about politics or current events and there is only so much you can say about the weather. My routine is fairly predictable and often boring. You already know about my morning smoothie and my long daily walks. I spend hours at the computer every day, but I don't work anymore so it is unclear what I am actually doing. The blog doesn't really have an audience anymore, although it still seems important to reach my 5000 day goal.

Lately, I've been waiting until I hear Dawn eating her breakfast to get out of bed. She's a noisy eater, so this kind of serves as my alarm clock. I don't want to spook Dawn by coming out to the kitchen while she is eating. She's such a nervous dog that this will often make her quit eating entirely. Every dog we've had has caused me to make changes in my routine. With Dawn the changes have been much more frequent.

I always make the bed when Janet takes Dawn outside to pee after her breakfast. I have to work fast because I know that she will come running back to the bedroom and hop on the bed whether I've finished making it or not. This is where she stays for most of the morning. I'll take her outside on a leash from time to time because I know that she likes being outdoors. She won't take the initiative to go outside on her own though. I've even left the back door open, but all this accomplishes is letting more mosquitos inside.

I waste a lot of time researching my next equipment purchase. Sometimes it's cars I'm interesting in. Other times it's camera gear. Lately, I've gotten interested in small, very portable telescopes. I learn a lot while I'm doing this. It's mostly useless knowledge, but the quest does keep me busy. I'm wondering why Sky & Telescope didn't like my proposal about an article on the trend toward alt-azimuth imaging and tracking. I've learned a lot about the subject while researching telescopes and find it interesting.

I'm not looking forward to summer. I got hot on my walk today and the temperature wasn't even that bad. I"m trying to remember what I used to do in the summer. I walked Dot and Dash around sunset a lot. I used to walk Spot after dark, but Dallas was a lot safer then. I'd never do that now. One way or another, I'm going to have to deal with summer. It's getting hotter every day.

One of these days I'm going to need to finish unpacking from my trip to the observatory. The camera gear still needs to be unpacked and returned to it's usual place. A little voice in my head keeps asking why it is necessary to do this. If I go on another trip, I will have to gather all the gear together again and put it back in the travel case.

I've taken this week's trash to the curb and am ready to start a new week. It's hard to believe it's almost June. I'll celebrate another birthday soon and will find myself even older. I've only recently started thinking of myself as old. My mind still feels young, but my body tells me otherwise.

Day 4166

There were scattered showers today, but not enough rain to change any plans. Not that I had any plans, mind you. It was such an uneventful day that it's hard to remember if I did anything at all. It's still too wet to do yard work, which is kind of a blessing. I'm not in the mood to do yard work at all. Mostly I just puttered around the house until it was time for my long walk.

You know the routine by now. I made the bed, fixed my morning smoothie, and watched the world fall apart on cable news. After breakfast I checked my messages and practiced processing some more astrophotography images. Today's efforts were a little more successful. I've been working with the same image for several days now and each day it comes out looking a little different. I still did one thing wrong today, so I might have to try this one more time before I move on to the next image.

Dawn was eager to walk today. She even branched off in a new direction, which kind of startled Janet and I. Instead of sticking to her normal path, she ventured down to the shoreline and had a great time smelling things. I thought she might be lost for a while, but at the appropriate time she turned away from the lake and headed back up the hill toward home. If this wasn't Dawn, you wouldn't give this kind of behavior a second thought. Seeing Dawn happy and curious was a big deal to us. She just seemed like a normal dog out for a walk on a Spring day.

As always, I continued walking after Dawn and Janet returned to the house. There was a nice breeze and it was mostly overcast, so I didn't get too hot. My feet didn't bother me too much today, so all was well. If I weren't so lazy, I'd take the car and go somewhere different to walk. It's a nice big park though and I don't mind seeing the same things day after day. At this time of year there are always new wildflowers to identify and lots and lots of ducks. Just about all the wildflowers have appeared by now and the fields and meadows are filled with color. This would be the perfect time of year in Dallas if it didn't rain so much.

The little sensor that monitors our electric lines sent a message to my watch saying that our Internet had gone out while I was out on my walk. Hmm. I didn't know that this thing monitored the Internet too. I called Janet to see if we'd had a power outage and she said everything was fine. It turned out that the only thing that was faulty was the sensor itself. Maybe I'll quit using this thing. It's supposed to help prevent electrical fires, but I'm still not sure if it does anything at all.

I got an invitation to apply for media credentials to attend the Boeing Starliner launch in late July. Do I try to go to this one, or the Falcon Heavy STP-3 launch at the end of June? There's also the Space X Inspiration 4 private mission later this Fall along with the first Starship orbital flight and hopefully Artemis-1 as well. That's a lot of activity and I can probably only afford to attend one of these launches. I'm not even sure I'll get approved to attend any. I've got to remain optimistic though. I've managed to get four articles about launch activities at Kennedy Space Center published, so at least in my own mind I'm a legitimate journalist.

I got a bag of ice from the grocery store, so I can postpone calling the appliance repairman for a while. I don't think I can postpone mowing the grass though. It's really been growing fast with all this wet weather. We'll see how the weekend goes. One way or another, I"m sure I'll be doing a lot of chores.

Day 4053

Last year at this time I had plans. I was getting ready to go to Florida for the ESA Solar Orbiter launch while simultaneously planning to spend several weeks out at McDonald Observatory. I had no idea that the world was about to change. NASA still had the welcome mat out. One of the last in person NASA Socials was taking place and there didn't appear to be any press restrictions. The Solar Orbiter launch would be my first with full press credentials and I remember enjoying riding on the press bus and sharing war stories with an interesting group of seasoned professionals. There wasn't a mask in sight.

The observatory needed my help for their annual Spring Break festivities when hundreds of people would converge on the visitor center every evening for the largest star parties of the year. I did see several Asians wearing masks when they visited my telescope at these star parties, but I didn't think anything of it at the time. Covid still seemed to be something happening a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

It's amazing how much has changed in a year. The observatory has been closed to visitors for months and it is very difficult to get press accreditation at Kennedy Space Center these days. I'm not even making plans anymore. Every time the world seems to try to return to normal, the virus says "not so fast" and introduces a whole new set of problems. My daily routine hasn't changed much at all, but I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. When I turn on the TV in the morning I always expect a surprise and often wonder how long this madness can continue.

One good thing about having dogs is that it gets you used to a fixed routine. Dog expect consistency. They like to be fed at a certain time, walked at a certain time, and even go to bed at a certain time. Add this to my own desire for consistency and you've got a day that is very regimented. I get up. Dawn eats her breakfast while I make the bed. I fix and slowly drink my humongous fruit smoothie. I check my e-mail and pay bills. We walk Dawn and then I continue on a much longer walk that can take two or three hours. When I return there's usually time for a few chores before dinner and then I write my blog post. Repeat this routine day after day and you can see why I'm ready for a trip.

There was an injured bird in the yard today. It didn't appear that the bird had been attacked by another animal, so we decided that it had probably flown into one of our large glass windows and was just dazed and confused. This has happened before and I've learned that it is best to just leave the bird alone for a while. The bird must have knocked itself silly, because it stayed in the same place for over three hours. Eventually it hopped up on a nearby ledge, looked around, and then flew away completely normally. I'm glad we didn't try to intervene. Trying to move the bird would have just made the situation worse.

Maybe I'm imagining things, but Dawn seems more relaxed with me lately. She followed me out to the kitchen when I was fixing her dinner this evening and she even hung around for a while when I was having breakfast. She's still pretty jumpy, but I think we are making progress. People occasionally ask me what happened to Dawn while I'm taking my long walk. I tell them that she's getting older and just doesn't like to walk as far any more. I imagine that's pretty close to the truth.

Thursday evening still seems like the end of the week to me. I've taken this week's trash to the curb and was very happy that it didn't include a dead bird.

Day 3851

Life has settled into a predictable routine. We get up early and walk for two hours. I make the bed when we return home. I watch TV while slowly eating breakfast for another two hours. I turn the computer on and check my mail and watch a few YouTube videos. Then I wonder what I'm going to do for the rest of the day.

The coronavirus has changed everything. There's not much point in making travel plans. Where would you go? I'm not sure when I'll ever feel comfortable getting on a plane again. Living in a world where you have to act like everything is radioactive has taken the fun out of the simplest things like going to an afternoon movie or eating in a neighborhood restaurant. The issue isn't about masks or no masks. It's more basic than that. We're living in a world where everyone is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Politics has spoiled a lot of old friendships as well. It's getting ugly out there. Why even bother talking with someone if you are just going to end up getting in an argument? Let's face it. You're not going to convert anyone these days. The lines have already been drawn in the sand.

I was pleased last year that I had managed to find two things that I really enjoyed doing. I liked spending time at large observatories and attending launches at Kennedy Space Center. My favorite observatory is closed for the foreseeable future and you'd have to be crazy to go to Florida right now. I'm not even comfortable taking my telescope down into the park at night because Dallas has become a dangerous place after dark. The longer the pandemic continues the more trapped you begin to feel.

There is no rain in the immediate future, so I guess it's time for me to go up on the roof again. It's probably time to mow the grass again as well. It's amazing how quickly the grass grows when it rains in the Summer. I've got to do outdoor chores early these days and it's usually already too hot by the time I've finished breakfast. The heat provides a good excuse for waiting until tomorrow, but eventually all these things need to be done. I'm not sure I'll get much done tomorrow because Saturday is always grocery day. One chore a day is plenty.

I watched an interesting tutorial video on astrophotography this afternoon. I learned a lot, including the fact that it is virtually impossible to take these kind of photos in a city. The guy who put the video together lives on a small remote island. No wonder his pictures looked so good. I've been thinking about getting up early to take pictures of the comet Neowise, but I can't even find a place nearby with a clear view of the eastern horizon. Maybe I'll have better luck when the comet begins appearing in the evening sky.

It's going to be a long Summer. Fall is probably a lost cause as well. Let's just hope that when Winter eventually arrives, the world will be a better place.
