Day 4838

What a strange day. We woke up under severe weather warnings with some ominous looking dark clouds overhead. I took a quick look at the weather radar and then we hurridly took Dawn on a quick morning walk. Our timing was next to perfect because as soon as we returned home there was a bright flash of lightning and some very loud thunder. The lightning must have hit something nearby because shortly after this our power went out.

The power came on again within a few minutes, but this was just the first in a series of power outages this morning. Dawn doesn't like power outages and they bother her even more when Janet is gone. The multiple power outages totally freaked Dawn out and she began acting weirdly. She started hiding in corners and trying to get into closets. For some reason our big bed was no longer a safe place and she wanted out of the bedroom. She ended up sitting in a living room chair next to a window which always bothers me because the chair is next to a glass coffee table and Dawn could hurt herself if she didn't get off the chair carefully.

I wasn't able to comfort or reassure Dawn because she is usually scared of me anyway. She seemed to want to go outside, but when I let her out she tried to make a nest in the ground cover. I eventually just let her sit on the living room chair because that's where she wanted to be. She didn't really settle down until hours later when Janet returned with the groceries. I thought Dawn would be fine once the power was restored, but it didn't seem to make any difference. Once Dawn goes into panic mode, it's hard to get her out of it.

Luckily, when Janet came home with the groceries Dawn started returning to normal. She still didn't want to go in the bedroom though, which was very strange. I think battling with fear this morning wore her out. She seemed exhausted this afternoon and is still sleeping on the bed right now. Dawn really doesn't like surprises. I don't like surprises either, but Dawn's reaction is pretty extreme. Hopefully the next few days will be completely uneventful so she can get her confidence back.

I got a real late start on my long walk today because I didn't want to leave Dawn alone while she was in panic mode. I was kind of tired myself by the time I started walking but I managed to finish my route. The weather this afternoon was completely different than it was this morning. The skies were clear and blue with pleasant warm temperatures. We got quite a bit of rain this morning, but by mid-afternoon it was like the storm never even happened. Luckily we didn't get the worst of the storm. The really bad weather went to the south of us.

When I was walking today I gave some thought to what I want to do next. Sadly, my mind was a blank. I don't feel like driving out to the observatory anymore and I'm not even that excited about going down to Florida for launches. I've never liked flying that much and all the current airline problems have caused old fears to return. Maybe Dawn and I aren't all that different. My favorite thing is sleeping now. What was I thinking yesterday? I really don't need another large format printer because I haven't been doing gallery shows for a long time. Most of my unsold art is sitting in the storage warehouse. I definitely don't need all the music gear in the office. I haven't written and recorded my own songs in ages. All these former interests seem curious and strange to me now. How did I get interested in this stuff in the first place? I'm not even sure how I got interested in rockets.

Tomorrow is another day. Hopefully it will be a day where Dawn remains calm and happy. For my part I'll make a grocery list and do my weekly shopping. I won't need to get gas because I didn't drive anywhere this week. I'm sure I'll take a long walk. I always take a long walk.

Shopping isn't easy anymore. I had to go to four different grocery stores to find the things on my list. There was nothing exotic or rare that I was trying to find. It was just ordinary stuff. I had trouble finding shredded wheat. I had even more trouble finding distilled water for the coffee maker. I needed dishwasher detergent. Most stores just had pods. I needed the liquid kind. Same thing with Swiffer dusters. Lots of places had the wet dusters but I wanted the dry variety. 

I think the problem is two-fold. There are still supply chain issues for many common items. The real problem is how stores restock inventory though. Increasingly stores use register receipts to determine what goes on the shelves. If not many people are buying a certain item it gets discontinued. That's why all the stores had plenty of sugar coated mini-shedded wheat, but very few still carry plain shredded wheat. Variety is disappearing from many stores. People like cheap stuff, so there is lots of cheap stuff. There are actually lots of expensive status items too. What's missing these days are the plain, practical items that were commonplace twenty years ago. 

I eventually found everything I needed but it took longer than expected. When I leave the house these days, I feel like I'm entering a dystopian world. Traffic is terrible and nobody knows how to drive anymore. There is an explosion of people making u-turns in the city. You really have to watch when making a turn at an intersection. Somebody making an unexpected, and often illegal u-turn can wind up right in your lane as you are turning. Stores rarely have exactly what you need anymore. I guess that's why Amazon is so popular. At any rate, I'm glad I do this only once a week. Traffic isn't as bad when I go to the gym because I almost always go during the day when most people are at work.

The weather was nice today. It was cloudy most of the day and there was a nice breeze. Even though I didn't get my shopping done until well after noon, it was still cool enough to take a walk in the park. The temperature was in the 70's all day. If this pleasant weather continues next week, I may mow the grass again. It's finally getting cool enough that this might be the last time I need to mow. My pace was just average today. It wasn't too fast and wasn't too slow. I did get a lot of steps though. I had a rare 22,000 step day. This is probably why my feet hurt today. It's probably time to retire my worn out Hokas and start using the new pair I bought recently. Walking a little less wouldn't be a bad idea either.

We're having more power outages now. These outages usually only last a few seconds, but sometimes they happen several times a day. The short outages knock out the Internet and cause all the networked items to reboot. Like the bad traffic and empty store shelves, these power outages are just another sign of the times.  Our power grid is no longer up to the job. A huge number of people have moved to Dallas recently and they use a lot of electricity. These newcomers also probably explain the surge in u-turns on our roads.

Today was a pretty good day. The weather was perfect. I managed to stay active without doing any household chores. Dawn was a little friendlier toward me and we has a delicious dinner of Maryland Crab Cakes and bacon wrapped asparagus. Tomorrow is Dawn's day. Hopefully we will have a nice Sunday outing.

No luck getting the car into the shop today. I guess those days are gone forever. I do have an appointment for tomorow though. I've abandoned the dealership for an independent Land Rover garage. The dealership couldn't get me in until the middle of August. I still hope this engine problem can be resolved quickly. I'm tired of walking in this heat and am more than ready to return to the gym.

I took my long walk right after breakfast again and it seemed even hotter than yesterday. I was able to complete my entire route today although I was very slow. I'd hate to even think about doing this all summer. I know that we had a terribly hot summer back when we had our first Dalmatian. Spot was getting old and he couldn't handle the heat well at all. I couldn't either, but those days are just a distant memory. Today is very real. I hope our air conditioner keeps working and we don't have any power outages. There was a very brief brownout this morning but it only lasted a few seconds. 

Luckily, Janet's car is still working fine. We went and visited the rescue Dalmatians this afternoon and they were glad to see us. We haven't been up at the kennel for several weeks, so it was good to catch up with everyone. Today, we met Spot, our newest rescue. He is a very friendly young male and hopefully he'll find his forever home soon. I took some pictures of Spot for the website and when we were finished playing with Charlie, JoJo, Willie, and Rocket, we took Spot to the vet for some additional tests and new bloodwork. I was hoping that JoJo wouldn't want to play in the outdoor yard today, but true to form he headed outside as soon as we saw him. It took treats to get him back inside again to the much cooler indoor play area. Rocket has really come a long way. He is no longer fearful and has become an expert at catching treats in the air. All the dogs were more subdued today because of the heat. Just like our own home, the kennel air conditioners were having trouble keeping the place cool.

We're getting these messages from Ercot now advising us to set our thermostat higher to save energy and avoid power blackouts. Usually the recommended temperature is 78 degrees. I hear people saying that there is no way they're keeping their homes that warm. Some still insist on keeping the temperature at 72 degrees. I keep wondering how they can even get their homes that cold. We're meeting the Ercot guidelines, but it's not for lack of trying to get the place colder. We can get the temperature down to 76 degrees at night when things cool down, but during the hottest part of the day our AC struggles to keep the place below 80 degrees. Cool air is still coming through the vents, but it doesn't stay cool long. We have way too many single pane floor-to-ceiling windows. You can feel the heat radiating in just standing next to these windows.

Dawn is a lot smarter than JoJo about the heat. She's OK with her sunrise walk, but wants to stay inside for the rest of the day. When we take her outside to pee, she does her business very quickly and races right back to the door to get inside again. I can't say that I blame her. It takes me almost an hour to cool down after I take my long walk. I'm drinking a lot of water lately. I'm sure that's a good thing. You've got to stay hydrated.

I'm not sure how I'm going to get my steps tomorrow. I have to get the car down to the shop by 8 AM. Since nobody has loaner cars anymore, I'll need to take an Uber back home. Lord knows how long this will take. Everything seems to take longer than expected. I hope this garage will actually work on the car tomorrow. The dealership was notorious for stacking cars up so they could maintain a steady workflow. Sometimes I would take my car in and it would be several days before they would get to it. It is what is is though. There's not a lot I can do about the situation. Car have become way too complicated for me to work on them myself anymore.

Here's hoping that tomorrow goes well. I enjoyed visiting the Dalmatians today and the house is finally getting cooler again now that the sun has set. We're doing the best we can, but this is going to be a very long summer.

Yay. The star tracker is working again. I'm not sure what the Benro people did, but apparently their third try was the charm. The first two patches they sent me to fix the connectcion problem didn't work, but the one they sent me yesterday worked perfectly. I'm still curious how a routine firmware upgrade rendered my camera useless and what the Benro engineers did to fix the problem. I'll probably never know the whole story though. Communication with my Chinese contacts has been rudimentary at best.

Now that the star tracker is working again, I'll have to turn my attention elsewhere. There are a ton of things that need attention around the house, but most of them are beyond my ability. I can't put on a new roof by myself. I'm not a good carpenter. And I'm certainly not a plumber. Sadly, I'm not very good at delegating things either. It would be easier if I could do everything myself, because I don't tend to trust people.

I went out and voted after breakfast this morning. When I arrived at the polling place, I was greeted by a poll watcher who told me that the power was out and asked if I was scared of the dark. Hey, no problem. I actually kind of like the dark. The room where the voting machines were was completely dark. All I could see were the glowing screens of the machines. I was surprised that the place was even open, but they said the voting machines were running on backup power. I was led to a machine by a lady with a flashlight and I cast my ballot. If there was even a time to be suspicious about whether your vote counted, this might be it. There must have been some people scared of the dark, because it appeared that I was the only one in the room voting. Voting in a dark room was certainly easier than getting the star tracker to take pictures on a dark sky.

It looked like it was going to rain this morning when we took Dawn on her sunrise walk. The rain never came, but it did stay overcast for most of the day. The cloudy weather made it easier to take my long walk. I was able to complete my full six mile route, but it wasn't easy. My feet seem to be getting worse. The Hoka shoes help, but walking is still painful on some days. It's time for my physical exam tomorrow, so I'll ask my doctor if I'm doing anything stupid. My gut feeling is still that a little discomfort is better than becoming idle. I need to keep moving and walking is still a lot easier on my joints than most other forms of exercise.

I've got to remember not to eat breakfast tomorrow. I need to fast because they will be doing routine blood work again. At least I was able to get an early morning appointment. I hate going without food for very long. I got a call from the clinic while I was out walking reminding me to wear a mask. I have a feeling that my doctor's office will keep requiring masks forever. Not a problem. Whatever keeps you happy is my motto. I don't wear a mask very often these days, but I've got plenty of them. Most are unused. I just wear the same one over and over again.

Dawn won a ribbon at training class again tonight. She's got quite a collection now. Janet says Dawn really enjoys the training class. Like most Dalmatians, she forgets everything she's learned on our morning walks, but that's OK. I've forgotten almost everything I learned in school as well.

We met Rocket today. Rocket is the last of the puppy mill dogs to arrive at the kennel. He had to stay at the vet longer than the others due to several medical issues. He still needs to gain some weight and his skin is infected, but he's looking so much better than when the rescue group picked him up. Rocket is definitely on the mend and he's going to be a great looking dog. He's still getting used to kennel life and is a little shy, but is very friendly. You can tell he hasn't had a lot of experience with toys, but he's curious. He's going to make a great pet for some lucky family.

It was a strange day at the kennel. It was raining pretty hard when we got there and about ten minutes after we arrived the power went out. Hopefully it's back on my now but there was no electricity for the duration of our visit. The dogs didn't seem to mind. There was enough light from an open door to the outside in the big playroom that we were still able to have fun with the dogs. We didn't see Candy and Julip today because they had just been spayed and needed to rest. Charlie, Oliver, Willie, and Jo Jo were all ready to play though. None of the dogs wanted to go outside and pee today. I can't blame them. It was pouring rain.

On the way home I was hoping that our own power didn't go out. The storms were pretty severe today and there were a lot of power outages. We got lucky. Everything was fine when we got home and Dawn was still sleeping on the bed. You could tell that we'd gotten a lot of rain. When I turned on the pumps, one of them didn't work. This wasn't good news. I really didn't want to deal with a roof leak, so as soon as there was a break in the rain I went up on the roof to see what was going on. It appeared that one of the pumps had burned out. It was hot to the touch and wasn't working. I didn't completely give up on the pump because it has an internal breaker that shuts the unit off when there is an overload. I used the time between storm cells to sweep as much water off the roof as I could before the rain started again. This was probably a futile effort. During a hard rain, the roof can fill with water in a matter of minutes.

It's raining hard again now, but there was a break in the storm that lasted over an hour, so I used the time to take a walk. It wasn't a long walk because I don't like getting caught in a thunderstorm. I did manage to get 15,000 steps today though and amazingly I didn't get wet. It takes a pretty nasty day to keep me housebound. Even on a rainy day, there always seems to be a little time to walk.

I took some Nyquil this morning to see if the claims on the bottle were true. It is supposed to relieve headache, fever, sore throat, minor aches & pains, nasal congestion, sinus pressure, and cough. I would have been happy if it just got rid of the congestion, but it did nothing. I wasn't terribly surprised. None of these over the counter cold remedies have any effect on me. Probably I still just have seasonal allergies after all. That would explain why cold medications don't work. I read an article recently that said this was the worst year  for seasonal allergies in modern times. Makes sense. It seems to be the worst year for everything else as well.

I'm still worried about a roof leak because we're getting a lot of rain. The faulty pump did start working again but it didn't stay working very long. Something is causing it to overheat too quickly. It's probably time to buy a new pump. The pumps I used to buy years ago were almost indestructible, but these new ones are lucky if they last two years. Nothing is made well anymore. Actually, I'm pretty sure that high quality pumps still exist somewhere, but you are never going to find one at Home Depot.

It's been a long and tiring day, but I did enjoy meeting Rocket. Maybe the weather will be better tomorrow.

We walked Dawn this morning and then I took Janet to the eye surgery center. The place was huge. It was also crowded. I never dreamed there were so many people in town with eye problems. The surgery center was very efficient. I got text messages every hour updating Janet's progress. The cataract surgery went well and Janet said that I had nothing to worry about when it was my turn.

All our phones seem to be dying. I took another phone to the neighborhood fix-it place today and they put in a new battery in less than thirty minutes. This is so much easier than going to the Apple Store. On the way back home I drove by the eagle's nest and noticed that the area was being fenced off. There didn't appear to be any eagles in the nest, but I can almost guarantee that there will be wrecks along this stretch of road, now that the nest location is common knowledge.

On the other side of the road there now appears to be a growing contingent of eagle watchers.  Some bring lawn chairs and sit there for hours whether the eagles are there or not. This nest must be new. It appears that the whole city discovered it the same day I did.

I don't think I've done a good job preparing for the storm. We haven 't gone to the store and bought extra food, stocked up on batteries, or done any other panic buying. Actually buying extra food doesn't make sense. If the power goes out for any length of time, the food in your refrigerator is just going to go bad anyway. I was going to test my generator to make sure I can still get it started, but I can do that tomorrow. The generator is a little harder to start with a bad shoulder, but I'm pretty sure it still works fine. It's too bad that the power company guys didn't trim our trees near the alley before the storm. They're in the neighborhood now, but they haven't made it to our house yet.

When I took my long walk today, I brought a camera with me. The eagles weren't in their nest unfortunately, but I did see one of them a mile or so down the road. The birds hunt over a fairly wide area, so you never know when they are going to turn up next. Usually when you see one, it is sitting on a branch near the top of a tall tree. One of these days I'll get a good picture, but it probably won't be when I'm taking my long walk. It's too much trouble to carry a DLSR with a telephoto lens while I'm walking and the little pocket camera I had with me today just doesn't take great bird pictures. It does pretty well with squirrels though.

It's weird how dependent we are on electricity. We have a gas furnace, but it doesn't work without electricity. The fan and a lot of switches and sensors all require electricity. It's too bad we don't have a fireplace. A fire in the fireplace makes a long power outage a little less ominous. We do have hot water though. The water heater doesn't seem to require any electricity at all. Maybe this storm won't be that bad. I'm not a very positive person, so I always expect the worst.

Janet has a follow up appointment with her eye doctor tomorrow, but I don't think Dawn will be going to training class tomorrow night. The rain isn't supposed to start until the afternoon. Who knows when it will start turning to ice. I plan on hunkering down and not going anywhere until this is all over. Hopefully, we won't lose power this year.

The storm of the century continues. It was a little warmer today, but still well below freezing. We got more snow overnight and nothing is melting. I think just about everyone has had enough of this. The power company is still unable to say when power will be fully restored and if you lose power, you are out of luck. When the electricity goes out, your house cools rapidly, greatly increasing the danger of burst pipes. I had a Zoom call scheduled this afternoon and it was abruptly canceled when one of the participants learned that a pipe had just broken in his home. This is what everyone dreads. Broken pipes, flooded homes, and not a plumber in sight. Now that everyone had learned to put their faucets on drip, some municipalities are telling residents not to do this because it is causing dangerously low water pressure levels. Warmer weather can't come soon enough.

When Janet and I went walking today, we couldn't believe some of the things we saw. There was a guy using an ATV to pull a kid on a sled around on city streets. I cringed just looking at this. If a car was to start sliding toward them, it would be very hard for the sled to get out of the way. When we arrived at the lake we saw several people attempting to walk on the ice. On person was way out on the edge of the ice where it met the remaining open water. Didn't this guy know that the lake ice was still very thin? If he fell through the ice, he would probably freeze before the fire and rescue folks could get to him. Of course there were plenty of cars driving too fast on the frozen roads. The cold weather definitely isn't making people smarter.

We still have power, which is kind of amazing since our electricity is usually the first to go when a bad storm hits us. I think power is slowly being restored in the city, but there are still a lot of people in the dark. I see tons of posts on Facebook from folks who have been without electricity for hours or even days. Things are even worse for my friends out at McDonald Observatory. They have been stranded up on the mountain without electricity for days and fuel for the emergency generators is running low. It's hard to believe that an entire state has been crippled by this storm. Hurricanes and tornadoes are bad, but they are very localized. This is the entire state.

There is still conflicting information on almost everything. AAA says to start your car for a short time and then immediately turn it off again. Others say to bring. the engine up to normal operating temperatures before turning it off. Janet is doing the former and I'm doing the latter. Neither of us knows who's right. I'm just glad the cars still start. I'm definitely going to have to add some air to my tires before I go anywhere. All four are very low.

When the snow first arrived, Dawn would race around the yard for a while after she went outside to pee. Now she does her business as fast as she can and immediately heads for the back door. Dawn is a smart dog and I think the novelty of snow wore off very quickly. Several of the neighborhood dogs seem to love the snow, but these all seem to be Huskies or Labs with thick heavy coats. I'm not surprised that Dawn gets cold quickly. So do I.

We have one more day of sub-freezing weather before things start to thaw. Late next week the temperature is supposed to be in the sixties again. Warmer weather can't come soon enough when you are faced with the possibility of a power outage or broken plumbing pipe at any moment. I"m wondering if we'll have to reschedule our second dose of the vaccine. They say the vaccination process is a mess now, since most vaccination sites have been closed all week. We'll see what happens. I'm sure February still has a few surprises for us.

Day 4072

Another ridiculously cold day. It's weird to be in the middle of a story that's become national news. Predictibly, everyone seems to be looking for someone to blame for this mess. Are frozen wind turbines the problem? Is poor statewide planning the problem? Is the fact that it's just not supposed to get this cold in Texas the problem? I'm sure that there is plenty of blame to spread around, but that's not going to make it any warmer. 

So many people are without power and the outages haven't been caused by ice covered power lines or falling trees. They've been caused by power companies shutting people off to prevent the entire power grid from collapsing. I never even realized that Texas wasn't even part of a national power grid. We're stuck when something like this happens because we can't buy extra electricity from warmer parts of the country. Usually this isn't a problem, but when the entire state is under a winter weather advisory, there just isn't enough energy to go around. I really wasn't expecting this, but I wasn't expecting Covid either. It makes you wonder what is going to happen next.

We still have power and I don't think any pipes have frozen, so we are among the lucky ones. Things can change quickly though, so I don't think anyone is taking their situation for granted. There's another storm headed our way that could be even worse than the first one. This time sleet and freezing rain are in the forecast and that is often a lot worse than snow. Most of our Winter power outages in the past have been caused by ice covered trees and power lines. That could easily happen again. 

There is so much conflicting information about how to cope with cold weather. Some say both the hot and cold water lines should be set on drip. Others say the hot water should be shut off entirely. There is a controversy about a drip versus a thin continuous stream of water too. I keep hearing that it takes a lot more energy to raise the temperature on cold days than to cool the temperature in hot days. This doesn't make sense. Our gas furnace uses way less electricity than the big air conditioner compressor out in the back yard. All I know is that my electric bill is way higher in July than it ever is in February.

We're setting our thermostat lower and turning off lights when we leave the room. I'm not sure how much this helps though. We have a very small house and use much less energy than most of this extravagant city.   Probably the biggest culprits are the huge office towers downtown that light up the sky every night from miles away. 

Dawn has sensibly decided to stay inside, but Janet and I are still taking daily walks. Each day the walks get a little shorter. We only walked 3 1/2 miles today, but that was plenty. The terrain seemed icier today since a lot of the dry power snow on top of everything has blown away. Underneath this snow is ice and it's pretty slick. I'm still amazed at how many people are out driving. Some of these people are probably essential workers, but others are just fools who are going to wind up in a ditch soon enough. Our own cars aren't going anywhere. We start then every day to keep things working properly, but they never leave the driveway.

I hope the sleet and ice forecasters are predicting tonight doesn't amount to much. After tomorrow, things will start to get better. They say by Saturday the temperature might even climb above freezing.

It's pretty darn cold down here. It's ten degrees right now and the temperature has been in the single digits for most of the day. Amazingly, we still have power. There have been rolling power outages throughout the state all day long, including in many parts of Dallas. So far, so good. Our furnace is still running. The dehumidifiers are pulling moisture out of the air and keeping the windows from fogging. And we haven't had any problems with frozen pipes.

I hope the power company doesn't cut power to our neighborhood. They've had trouble turning the power back on in some areas and planned 15 minute to 2 hour outages have turned into eight hour nightmares. We're trying to conserve energy, but when the temperature is 5 degrees outside, turning down the thermostat to 68 degrees doesn't seem to make much of a difference. The furnace still runs all the time.

Dawn loves to race around in the snow for about two minutes and then run back inside to get warm. She definitely doesn't feel like taking a walk. Janet and I didn't think we'd take another walk after yesterday's experience, but we got bored sitting around the house and we went walking again. I was surprised at how much snow we got overnight. I was even more surprised at how many people were out on the roads. Today was a federal holiday and there weren't a lot of compelling reasons to drive anywhere. That certainly didn't stop anyone. Everyone with a Jeep seemed determined to see how it handled in the snow. There were almost as many cars in the park as there are on a nice day. 

We didn't walk nearly as far today, so we made it home without getting wet and cold. It was actually beautiful outside. The sky was clear and the snow was a light powder that still looked clean and pristine. The only problem was the wind. There were wind chill warnings in effect for most of the day which made the single digit temperatures feel like it was 15 degrees below zero. I'm glad I have warm clothes.

The snow is gone for the moment, but they say that it's going to be even colder tomorrow. Then another storm system arrives on Wednesday, bringing even more snow and ice. I don't think that the temperature is expected to climb above the freezing mark until this weekend. All this makes me continue to worry about power outages. We'll be extremely lucky if we manage to make it through this cold spell without an outage.

I continue to start my car twice a day to keep the battery charged. I've been surprised at how long it takes for the engine to warm up to normal operating temperatures. All four tires are low, which shows that air pressure and temperature are related. I have an air compressor, but I'm not about to sit out in the cold and pump up my tires. When it warms up, the tire pressure should go back to normal.

Ice is starting to form all over the lake now, but I wouldn't walk on it yet. The ice still looks extremely thin. Someone will try to walk on it soon. It will probably be the same people who were convinced that they could drive their cars on icy roads. Janet and I wondered where all the ducks were today. There were none to be seen. The white Pelicans have disappeared as well. These birds probably haven't gone far. There is lots of undergrowth near the shoreline that probably gives the birds some protection. 

I'm surprised that Dawn hasn't tried to get under the covers yet. Most Dalmatians seem to learn how to do this very quickly. She doesn't even seem to like having a blanket over her. We've been covering her with a light blanket before we go to bed and it's always off when we wake up in the morning. I don't seem to have this problem. The more blankets I have on top of me, the better I sleep.

I hope we wake up in the morning with heat. As long as we have electricity, gas, and running water, the weather can do whatever it wants. Even today's wind has been kind to us because it's been blowing a lot of the powder snow off the roof. I think we're reasonably well prepared, but a lot of surviving a storm like this depends on luck. So far, we've been lucky.
