Day 4206

No rain today. There was an abundance of heat and humidity though. Even though the sky was pretty with lots of big puffy clouds, it wasn't a great day to be outside. That didn't stop us from walking of course. We got up early and walked Dawn before the heat became opressive and then I ate my breakfast. I didn't really feel like going to the gym again, so I convinced myself that it was still cool enough for a walk in the park.

It's too bad that sweating isn't as beneficial as elevating your heart rate when you exercise. If sweating was the goal, I'd be in great shape. Today would have been better if there was a breeze, but the air was pretty still. I completed my six miles, but by the time I returned home I was beat. Maybe I should have gone to the gym after all. I've finally learned the importance of hydration and drink a lot of water while I cool down. As I was returning to normal I watched a repeat of yesterday's Space X Transporter 2 launch on the streaming channel. This time the rocket got off the pad without incident and everything worked like clockwork. The booster landed back at Kennedy Space Center which doesn't happen very often. Seeing the booster return is pretty exciting if you are watching the launch in person. Maybe someday. I definitely don't have any plans to travel this summer. It's going to be a while before travel seems normal again. Hotels and air fares still seem way too high to me. 

I watered the new grass this afternoon. It's hard to tell if I'm watering too much or too little. When it's hot, the water seems to disappear pretty fast. I hope I can keep this grass alive. It was a lot of trouble to put it in. While I had the hose out, I watered the plants in the atrium. There's an outlet inside the atrium, but I haven't used it since there was a severe plumbing problem years ago and we almost flooded the house. Now I just use an outside hose and water the plants through the screen wire wall that forms one side of the atrium area.

On days like these I wish I could sleep soundly during the day. I take short naps, but I don't really go to sleep. If I could get the sleep I need during the day, I wouldn't feel bad about staying up late at night. I've always been able to get more done at night. It's quiet and peaceful. When I was working, I did a lot of my writing jobs at night. It's unfortunate that writing at night and stargazing aren't really compatible with each other. One activity is inside and the other is outside and both require a certain amount on concentration. Oh, well. At least I'm wide awake if there is a good opportunity for stargazing. I do pretty well out at the observatory.

I really need to make another attempt to find the source of the roof leak tomorrow. All the forecasts say that it's going to start raining again later in the week. I'm probably going to end up just pouring some of the silicon material over random spots as a futile gesture. I really did look carefully when I was up on the roof the other day and couldn't find any obvious place where the water might be getting in.

Janet and Dawn went to training class again tonight. Dawn certainly seems excited as they are getting ready to leave the house. I'm not sure that Dawn is wild about being trained, but she sure seems to like to go places in the car. Hopefully she will learn to heel eventually. She still pulls pretty bad when she is on a leash. Pulling on the leash is a lot better than panicking and freezing in place though. I think we are making progress.

Day 4189

It was a very busy day. Right after breakfast I got out the reciprocating saw and attempted to cut down the remaining dead Photinia trees in the back yard. The new carbide tipped blade helped a lot, but there were still a few trees where the stumps were too thick for my saw. I was amazed at how heavy these trees were. I had trouble hauling some of them out to the alley. Later this week I will move the pile of wood out to the curb for the monthly bulky trash pick-up. By the time I was finished, I was drenched in sweat and changed my clothes for the first of many times today.

After a short nap to rest up, we took Dawn on her special outing to her Sunday park. She gets so excited about these Sunday outings now. I'm beginning to think that she's not really scared to ride in the car. All her weird behavior might be just the way she shows her excitement. We had a nice walk. It was starting to get hot, but the walk was short enough that Dawn was in no danger of getting overheated. Her self imposed one mile limit is actually pretty smart. We always conclude our outing with ice cream cones at Andy's. Dawn loves ice cream. After we returned home I changed my clothes for a second time. I wonder if people sweat more when they get older. I never remember sweating this much in the summer.

The temperature was in the 90's by the time we returned home. I was pretty tired already and wasn't really looking forward to a six mile walk. I took a short nap and finally managed to convince myself that I still needed the exercise. This was another slow day. My pace was two minutes per mile slower than it usually is on a cooler day. The park wasn't very full for a Sunday. Most sane people were staying inside. I'm always surprised at the number of people having family picnics on really hot days. Is this actually fun? There were very few joggers and runners today, but quite a few picnics.

When I returned from my long walk I was totally beat. I took a shower and changed my clothes for a third time. At least our air conditioner is working well. If the air conditioner broke we would be miserable in less than an hour. Things don't look good for the week ahead. It looks like it is going to be sunny and hot for the rest of the week. Temperatures will be in the high 90's and may top 100 degrees on some days. This is only June too. July is usually much worse.

It's easy to get dehydrated on days like this. I find myself drinking twice as much water as I usually do. Even this probably doesn't replace the amount I sweat though. Our house is still cool, but the air conditioner never stops running. I have a feeling that our electric bill is going to be horrendous next month. The electric bill is always high in the summer, but the electric companies all raised their rates after last winter's big freeze knocked the power out throughout the state. I'm not looking forward to this. The air conditioner compressor and two dehumidifiers use a lot of electricity.

These weeks go quickly. It's already time to visit the rescue Dalmatians again. We heard that Riggs got adopted this week and that there's a new dog up at the kennel. I'm not sure what his name is, but he's young and quite handsome. I'll need to remember to take my camera so I can get some pictures up on the website. I don't expect a lot to happen next week, but I do wish it would cool off a little. How quick we forget. It's only been a week or so since all the rain ended and I'm already wishing it would come back.

I got my car safety inspected for another year. There is no window sticker anymore, but you still need to have the inspection done before you can buy the annual registration sticker at your local grocery store. Why do I need the registration sticker? Rules. There used to be a little sticker you put on your license plate as well. Those disappeared a long time ago. I'm old enough to remember having to go downtown to the department of motor vehicles for a new plate every year. You rarely get a new plate anymore. All these physical ways of identifying you are gradually going away. I used to have a Toll Tag in my front window but you don't need the tag anymore. Sensors just know when you are driving on a toll road. It probably won't be long before there aren't any stickers or tags on your car at all. The car will just broadcast everything about you to the state as soon as you turn on the ignition.

For now these annual safety inspections are still part of my routine. I could get everything done a lot quicker at a local garage, but I continue to drive up to the dealership and waste half the morning. The time goes quickly. I had a long conversation about cars with a sales guy I know. He shared some new information with me about the new Land Rover Defender that is being introduced this Fall and we traded stories about various exotic cars we'd seen about town. I looked at all the new cars on the show room floor and lamented the high prices for Range Rovers these days. Pretty soon my car was done. My day hadn't really changed at all. I still had a morning smoothie and I still had a morning walk. My trip to the dealership just made my morning walk even hotter because I got a late start.

I thought that an AT&T technician would come back today and hook up the cable that was buried in my yard yesterday. I guess I'll have to call about this tomorrow. I can't remember whether I need to be here or not when this happens. I've finally figured out why AT&T installs these temporary cables. If you had to wait and wait without any service at all until the technicians eventually showed up, customers would be pretty mad. They probably figured out quickly that throwing away a lot of fiber optic wire was easier than dealing with irate customers.

Even though I complain about sweating a lot, I still like walking outside better than walking at the gym. There is more visual stimulus outside. I certainly wouldn't see many Great Egrets at the gym. If I just wanted to avoid the heat, I could go to the gym every day. I'd have to drive to my gym though and I don't like driving. I do like talking about cars however. It's complicated. I don't really mind the heat, but my skin is taking a beating. I don't remember my skin looking this bad during previous summers. Do I need to use sunblock? It would be so much easier if I just stayed home and got fat watching Netflix.

I've been hearing cars running through water all evening. I thought it had started raining for a while. When I went outside to investigate I discovered that the neighbor's sprinkler system had broken. There were big fountains of water spewing out into the street. What a waste. I wish one of those nozzles was pointed over at my yard. I could use the water. I guess everyone has problems during the summer. I just hope my air conditioner keeps working.
