Dasy 4494

I'm losing track of the days again. I thought it was Friday for a while this morning. Nope, it's only Thursday. It's an easy mistake to make when all days seem more or less the same. Now that the days are getting longer, our sunrise walks with Dawn don't seem quite so early anymore. The sun is usually well above the horizon before we leave the house. It's interesting to see where Dawn will lead us on these walks. Now that she is more confident, she takes a slightly different path each day. I don't really think she's being adventurous. She's a dog and is probably just following interesting smells.

After breakfast this morning I wrote an overdue letter to my sister and took it to the post office. In all the years we've lived here, I've never just left a letter in our mailbox for the postman to pick up. I have no faith in mail carriers and somehow think the mail will never be delivered this way. I still like to drop the letter in the slot myself at the posts office.

On the way home I needed to stop at CVS and HomeDepot to pick up a few things. CVS is really strange these days. I think there is only one employee in the entire store. Usually there is nobody at the register. You have to search around the store to find the employee who is usually stocking shelves and tell them that you need to check out. It's kind of ironic that businesses say that they can't find employees when they don't really want them either. Just about everyone is trying to get you to use an app on your phone to make your purchases. I do use an app for grocery shopping, but it seems to get worse with each new update. Now you have to wade though a bunch of ads before you can get to the scanning function.

I have to go to Home Depot to find light bulbs. I still have two lamps in the living room that use quartz halogen bulbs instead of LED bulbs. It's getting hard to find these kind of bulbs. Home Depot still has incandescent bulbs if you are really old school. I don't go that far. Most of the lights in our house have been converted to LED bulbs by now.

It was a nice day for a walk. It was 70 degrees with clear skies and very little wind. I'm back to walking my regular six mile route again, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to get back to my old pace. It used to take me 18 minutes to walk a mile. Now it takes me at least 21. It's hard to say if it's my feet or just general wear and tear that is slowing me down. All I know is that I sure feel older than I did last year.

I was finally able to order the custom camera part I wanted from the weird Chinese website. A nice lady from the company guided me through the arcane order process using Facebook Messenger. We'll see if I actually get this part now. Actually, I've ordered everything from photo backdrops to watches directly from Chinese companies and they've never let me down yet. Many of these companies seem more modern and efficient than their American counterparts. Ordering from Europe is the worst. I really try to avoid ordering anything from Europe.

I hope the Elon Muck is able to buy Twitter. It's a long shot because corporate America and the investment community hates Elon. He's a loose cannon to them and might ruin the privileged little world they've created for themselves. Something got to be done about social media though. It's gotten out of control. Even I have been censored and all I do is write about dogs. I still miss the old days when all we had was IRC and newsgroups. The Internet was nice when it was all about conversation. Now it's about influence and power. That's not good. I think we'd be better off if social media and today's connected world just disappeared. We don't need a hive mind. We need people to start thinking for themselves again.

Day 4054

I made another effort to declutter the office today. I gathered up a bunch of stuff to take to the storage warehouse and at the last minute decided to throw half of the pile away. Was this a breakthrough? I certainly hope so. The storage warehouse isn't big enough to hold all this stuff. Much of what I tossed today were portfolio samples. Back when my companuy was busy, I was meticulous about saving samples. I must have saved at least twenty copies of everything I did. Sometimes I would mail samples to prospective clients, but mostly I just hung on to them. As my company's reputation grew over the years, the samples became less and less important. Most of the jobs I got were by word of mouth. I don't even think I've looked at the samples I threw away today in over ten years. It's finally time for this stuff to go.

I got another invitation to schedule a vaccination from a major hospital today. These guys seemed a little more organized than my pharmacy. I made it to the end of the online application form and there were real dates and locations for me to choose. Before making my appointment, I went and asked Janet if I should go ahead and get the shot now. The first available appointment was actually tomorrow. I'm still a little uncertain about this whole process, but Janet said to go ahead and do it and started looking to see if she'd gotten an e-mail too. I went back to the computer and clicked on the date I wanted and got a message saying that this time slot was no longer available. I refreshed my screen and discovered that none of the time slots were available anymore. Snooze you lose I guess. I'll have to be quicker next time. There must have been tons of people who immediately jumped on this invitation right after getting their e-mail message.

Dawn seems like such a happy dog now. Maybe all she wanted was for us to do things her way. She loves her shorter walk and if Janet has time, she is often eager to take another short walk later in the day. We always knew that Dawn didn't like riding in the car. What we didn't know is that she didn't want to go anywhere that seemed unfamiliar. Dawn loves her new home with its big soft bed. Her life has been full of twists and turns. I think she's afraid that if she leaves this place, she might never come back. It's all good now. We'll take her on little walks where she always knows the way home and do everything we can to assure her that this place is hers forever.

I find it interesting that the one thing that had managed to bring this horribly divided country together is a hatred of Wall Street. Everyone is cheering on the band of young Robinhood investors who got together and brought down the powerful hedge funds and short sellers. Democrats, Republicans, and even loners like myself are applauding this democratization of Wall Street. I've been an investor for years and have never liked hedge funds and short sellers. I'd like to see the whole practice of shorting stocks banned forever. To me, investing remains simple. Buy shares of a company you believe in, hang on to the stock, and watch the company grow.

I've been waiting all week for the SN9 Starship to launch in Boca Chica. It appears now that the FAA thinks that Elon's rockets are dangerous and doesn't want to give him clearance to launch. Jeez. Give the guy a break. All rockets are dangerous. Somehow this same FAA thought that the 737 Max was safe enough to fly before they stated crashing. Let Elon pursue his dream of going to Mars. If the bureaucratic web becomes too tangled, he will just take his rockets elsewhere and Texas will lose a lot of high paying jobs.

It's time to make a grocery list again. These weeks really go quickly now. Time slows down a bit when the week is filled with activities. An empty week is exactly the opposite. Blink twice, and it's grocery day again.

Day 3977

One launch down, one to go. The United Launch Aliance NROL-101 Mission lifted off right on schedule, but tomorrow's Crew-1 launch hit a snag. The launch got postponed until Sunday night because what remains of tropical storm ETA is headed towards the drone ship that will recover the Falcon 9 booster. For a while today we all thought the delay might be a lot worse. Rumors were swirling that Elon Musk had wasn't feeling well and had tested positive for cronavirus. The fear was that when contact tracing was finished it would lead all the way back to the astronauts. This seemed unlikely to me, but you never know with Elon. He could have had dinner with the astronauts recently.

Today was busy. After a light breakfast I drove to the NASA Accreditation Office and picked up my credentials. There are always lots of badges at these events. Everyone wears a lanyard around their neck with the badges they need. I had an orange badge and a green badge today. I had two one-on-on interviews with Commercial Crew mission specialists and went to a press conference with NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and other dignitaries. I was going to ask a question at the press conference but someone from a television network beat me too it. Hey, at least it was a good question.

Tonights's launch was a classified mission for the National Reconnaissance Office. Since this was an Air Force mission, the press group I was a part of viewed the launch from Patrick Air Force Base. The weather was good and we had a spectacular view. The Atlas 5 rocket lifted off just after sunset and as it rose in the sky you could see it break into sunlight again. I was expecting a night launch and had a little trouble with the constantly changing exposures right around sunset. I got a few good pictures though. Doing this is definitely a learning experience.

I decided to extend my stay in Florida in hopes that Space X can resolve its problems with the drone ship in the next 24 hours. I can't stay here forever, but it would be a shame to miss what I came here for. Some launches get delayed again and again. The Crew-1 mission has been delayed several times already. It's a shame that tomorrow's launch got scrubbed. The weather looks perfect tomorrow. On Sunday the chances of rain start increasing again. We'll see what happens. Hey, I'm on assignment. I need to get the story.

I'm not sure what I'll do tomorrow. Nothing's happening at the Space Center. I don't want to stay in the Hoel all day, but Covid has certainly curtailed a lot of what you can do around town. Since I arrived at Patrick Air Force Base early today I went to a neat little museum on base while I was waiting for the launch. I know there's a space museum in Titusville, but I think it is closed. Maybe I'll go back to the KSC Visitor Center. I've been there twice but there's still a ton of stuff I haven't seen yet.

I think I'll sleep well tonight. It's been a long day. Covid has certainly changed the way we cover space launches. Some of the people I interviewed today are still working at home. If Elon Musk actually does have Covid he won't be allowed back at the Space Center until he has completed a fourteen day quarantine. I wore my mask outdoors all day today. NASA is pretty strict. It made me appreciate our ability to walk Dawn in the park every morning and pretend that the world is normal.

Day 3954

I didn't do much today, but it still felt like a busy day. Dawn must have felt good this morning because she chose a longer route on her own. We walked almost five miles this morning with no issues at all. Dawn completed all her meds several days ago with no signs of a relapse. Her temperature is normal. Her behavior is normal. And all is well.

After spending an inordinate amount of time eating breakfast, I did some accounting and paid a few more online bills. I wish I had the nerve to just quit keeping track of things. One of my fantasies has always been having the ability to just buy what I want whenever I feel like it without even considering the price or how much is in my account. That's not going to happen. I'm a methodical, careful planner, but it gets old sometimes.

I had a conversation in Messenger this morning with a young niece who is interested in the same things I am. These conversations are rare, but I always end up feeling slightly better about the millennial generation. Many of these kids are hopeless, but the ones who chose to take STEM classes and pursue a difficult goal no matter how hard it seemed at the beginning are going to do just fine. I feel the same way about some of the younger folks I've met at NASA events. The future belongs to those who chose science over selfies.

I spent some time this afternoon learning how to enhance photos of the night sky by stacking multiple images of the same scene using special software that can align all the stars in each images. Usually you need at least ten images to see much of a difference. I have plenty of raw material to work with, but this is going to take a while. I just watched some YouTube tutorial videos today while looking at my notes from the workshop. When I find some time later this week I may start stacking some real images.

The rescue group got a call today from a veterinarian who still wants to do Christmas photos. This came as a surprise to me. I was fairly convinced that there would be no Santa Paws photos this year because of Covid-19. Everything else has been canceled this Fall, so I just assumed that photo events would be canceled as well. I'm a little apprehensive about doing this, but the more I thought about it, I'm pretty sure everything will be fine. Unless Santa himself has the virus, I'm spending most of my day with a bunch of dogs. Dalmatian Rescue could certainly use a fundraiser, especially since our golf tournament got canceled. Anyway, if I survive my upcoming trip to Florida to attend the Crew 1 launch, doing Santa photos will be a piece of cake.

When I looked at the Boca Chica live feed today I noticed that they are putting a nose cone on the current Starship prototype. This thing is starting to look like a real rocket now. No more flying grain silos I guess. I'm still amazed at how fast Elon Musk works. NASA has spent years developing Artemis, but Elon has already accomplished more with his Starship program in just a few months. I'd still like to go down to Boca Chica and see a Starship launch myself, but it's going to be hard to get invited.

Janet says there's a new Dalmatian at the kennel now. I'm curious about this new dog and will need to update the website the next time we go visit the kennel. Dalmatians, rockets, and stars. What else do you need? It may seem like a small world to you, but it is an entire universe to me.

Day 3939

Another busy day. Dawn was in good spirits this morning. I was surprised at how much energy she had. We walked four miles and she kept wanting me to pick up the pace. Now that her Prednisone dose has been reduced, Dawn seems a lot more like her old self. I really hope she remains stable when she has completed her meds. A healthy dog is usually a happy dog.

After breakfast I found a place to stay reasonably near the observatory and made reservations for my trip. I'll be staying at Prude Ranch, a 100 year old working cattle ranch that now hosts visitors in several guest houses on the property. I've passed the ranch several times on my way to the observatory and always wondered what it would be like to stay there. The people I talked with today were extremely nice and made me feel welcome. This is a lot better alternative than driving all the way back to Fort Davis every night after the astrophotography workshop sessions have concluded.

I got my flu shot this morning. It still seems weird to go to the doctor with all the Covid safety protocols they have in place. The nurse who gave me the shot said that it was a good thing I came in today. There is evidently a lot more interest in flu shots this season than in previous years. Janet and I both got our senior shots today. By the end of the day the supply that came in yesterday was already gone.

Our forehead thermometer never gives me the same readings as the one at the doctor's office. How do you calibrate these things? I suspect that you can't. It's kind of silly taking my temperature every day if the readings aren't even right. There's one thermometer at the house that I know is accurate. It's been up a dog's butt quite a few times though. Not going to use that one.

I wish I had a better way of dealing with my seasonal allergies. They were pretty bad today. I can't take antihistamines. Even newer antihistamines like Zyrtec and Allegra leave me feeling worse than doing nothing at all. As a consequence, my nose is starting to look like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Masks and constant sneezing aren't a good combination. I hope I can shake these allergies before I begin my trip. In a post-Covid world, sneezing a lot is not a good look.

One of the Space X rockets that has been delayed quite a few times finally got off the ground today. Several of my Florida photographer friends got some beautiful pictures. I wonder if today's successful launch had anything to do with Elon Musk flying out to Cape Canaveral to personally inspect things. He spends most of his time in Boca Chica these days. A lot is happening down there. Pretty soon the first Starship prototype that actually looks more like a rocket than a flying grain silo is going to fly. I still watch the Boca Chica live feed almost every day. It's amazing how much is going on down there.

I keep putting off making roof repairs because working with the silicon coating is so messy. This is the perfect time to do it though. The weather is cool and there is a long stretch of sunny days ahead. Maybe I can force myself to do this loathsome chore tomorrow.

Day 3925 - Autumn Equinox

Another rainy day. We had to wait until this afternoon to walk Dawn. Luckily, it was still quite cool when the rain stopped. The weather seemed appropriate for the first day of Fall. I think Dawn would have preferred to sleep all day, but we all need our exercise. Even on a wet day there is always something to see. The female Muscovy duck moved her ducklings about a half mile away from all the other ducks. I don't know what this means, but it was probably a good idea. There are several owls that live near where the ducks gather. I imagine that ducklings would look pretty tasty to an owl.

I got my official invitation to the Delta IV Heavy NROL-44 launch today. Now I've got to decide whether to go or not. The ULA website says that there is a 70% chance of good weather at launch time. My long range weather app says exactly the opposite, predicting a strong chance of thunderstorms. I'm pleased that I'm good to go, but more than a bit frustrated that travel is so complicated in the post-Covid world. Hotels and rental car companies are offering special deals to attract customers, but airlines have actually become more expensive. They've reduced the number of flights they offer as well, so that chances are good that you'll still be flying on a full plane.

I watched Elon Musk's battery day announcement this afternoon. I hope this doesn't mean that I've become a fanboy. The talk was actually kind of interesting in a dry technical way. I guess I never really realized how batteries were made. The audience for this talk was a bunch of people sitting in their Teslas. When they liked something Elon said, they would honk their horns. I don't know if this was corny or cute, but I'm still thinking about getting a Cybertruck.

I wonder when the mosquitoes disappear for the year? It seems like they shouldn't be a problem in mid-September, but I'm still getting bitten when we take our morning walks. I'll be glad when the bugs are gone. One of the only good things about Winter around here is fewer bugs. I'm getting tired of knocking down wasp nests, clearing away spider webs, and keeping roaches out of the house. If I do go to Florida I'll need to remember to take plenty of insect repellant. The bugs down there make ours seem like amateurs.

Dawn immediately jumped off the bed and came to the kitchen when I called her to dinner tonight. She also followed me outside after she ate when she needed to pee. Is this progress? It's hard to tell. Dawn still seems very fearful for no reason at all. I'm convinced that she was treated badly in her former life. You realize that trust is a fragile thing with both people and animals. It's hard to acquire and very easy to destroy.

I forgot what day is was several times today. I'll probably do the same tomorrow. Maybe this is why I'm thinking of going to Florida even though the weather is less than ideal and the planes aren't safe. It's time for something different.

Day 3874

I spent a lot more time watching Bob and Doug return to earth than I intended. It was fascinating watching all the events leading to splashdown in real time as they happened. The capsule was completely automated and the astronauts were basically just passengers. All the people in the control room at Hawthorne were just monitoring a very complicated sequence of events to make sure nothing went wrong. Nobody had to intervene. Unlike the Boeing Starliner mission, the Space X software worked perfectly. I've always been impressed with what Elon Musk has been able to accomplish. Today was a big milestone. I can't wait to see Starship get off the ground.

It didn't take me long to spot Elon in the mission control video feed. He was the guy in the front row who kept taking his mask on and off and casually eating a sandwich while everyone else was staring intently at their screens. I kept wondering what the guy behind him wearing white hi-top boots was doing. Other than the outlandish shoes, he was dressed very normally. I spotted a woman on the back row of monitors who didn't appear to be wearing a mask. What was the story here? The room itself seemed spotless with the exception of one table with a big piece of laminate material falling off. Some might find the long lock-off shots of control rooms boring, but I like looking at the details. Where is the box of donuts? Who is texting or taking selfies instead of looking at their screen? There is always something going on.

I bet Space X will keep the splashdown location secret the next time there is a manned launch. I was surprised to see a flotilla of cabin cruisers and fishing boats coming near the capsule as the Space X team prepared to secure it. Space X was probably even more surprised. Apparently they forgot to ask the Coast Guard to set up a safe zone around the splashdown area. Some of these private boats got very close to the capsule while it was floating in the water. Oops. I doubt that this will happen again.

I didn't spend all day watching the landing. We had a nice walk with Dawn this morning. We didn't get an early start, but the weather was a little cooler and there was a nice breeze. There are always fewer people in the park on Sunday than on Saturday. Tomorrow morning there will be fewer still. Everything is very predictable after you've been doing these walks for a while. Usually you see the same people day after day. When a regular walker disappears, you can't help but wonder what happened. Did they catch the virus, or did they just get tired of exercising?

I briefly thought about going back to the gym today, but then I remembered that the grass needed mowing. Mowing the grass burns just as many calories as my time on the treadmill. The yard looks better too. I'll go back to the gym some day, but I'll still in no hurry. I'm getting plenty of exercise on Sundays. 20,000 steps was a piece of cake today.

Janet made a pot roast for dinner tonight. We've had to cut out a lot of activities, but we are certainly eating well during the pandemic. Tomorrow we meet Marshall when we go visit the rescue dogs at the kennel. He's finished with his initial visit to the vet and will be joining Charlie, Hank, and Luckie. I need to remember to take my camera so I can get some pictures of him for the website. I don't anticipate an exciting week, but it will be predictable.

Day 3620

I got waitlisted for the Starliner launch. This pretty much means that I won't be going. Not a lot of people get invited to these launches and very few decide that they don't want to go after they receive an invitation. Cancelations do happen but they are rare. Hey, at least I got accepted to one of the two events I applied for. Strangely, I think there will be more cancelations  for the Michoud Assembly Facility event. It begins at 7 AM. Why so early? I was hoping to fly to New Orleans on the same day as the event to avoid an extra night in a hotel. That's not going to happen. The earliest flights leaving Dallas won't get me there in time.

It rained a lot last night but I haven't been up on the roof yet. It was a windy, cold day and I didn't feel like dealing with the standing water. I'm going to have faith in my repairs and wait until the weather warms up a bit. I may regret this decision, but so far there are no signs of a leak. I think the weather will be much warmer on Sunday. Let's see if I can postpone this awful task for a few days.

The highway department is closing down our street again tonight. Something major must be happening with the bridge construction again. This new shutdown only lasts for one day, so there won't be as much of a disruption as there was before. It will be a little harder to go to the grocery store tomorrow, but it will be a lot easier to get out of the driveway without any traffic. I still don't know why they are replacing this bridge. So far, the new bridge doesn't look any bigger or better than the old one.

Everybody is already making fun of Tesla's new pickup truck. They are saying that this Bladerunner inspired design won't be popular. This is probably true because it appears that the target market is me. I like this thing, even though I will probably never buy an electric car because I'm deeply suspicious of lithium ion batteries. I admire the fact that nothing appears to slow Elon Musk down. His spaceship blew up in Boca Chica a couple of days ago and his live test of the Tesla pickup's shatterproof windows was a disaster. These problems will be fixed and Musk will just keep moving along. I still think he's going to get to Mars before NASA.

It was still raining when I woke up this morning, so I didn't go out for breakfast. I probably would have stayed home even if it had been a nice day. It was a good run while it lasted, but I'm starting to get tired of my Friday breakfast outings. I've tried everything in dozens of restaurants and nothing appeals to me anymore. I just had a bowl of cold cereal and a cup of coffee today. I think I need to start buying more fruit so I can have my smoothie on Friday as well.

I'm disappointed that I won't be able to visit the Dalmatians next Monday. I just realized that I have an appointment with the eye doctor and it's too late to change it. Actually the NASA event in New Orleans begins on a Monday as well. I need to do a better job of planning ahead. I need to block out Monday's on my calendar forever. It's really the only good day to spend a lot of time with the dogs. The kennel is too busy on other days.

I guess I'd better put a bucket out tonight. I don't think the roof will leak, but you never know. Better safe than sorry I say.

Day 3341

What happened to our nice weather? One day it's 70. The next day it's 30. I wonder if the entire Winter is going to be this way? Since I like consistency, these extreme fluctuations are driving me nuts. It was cold and nasty outside this morning, but Dash still wanted his walk. I would rather have slept in a little longer, but off we went. Dash continues to do better than expected. I don't know where he got his second wind, but it's nice to see him with a little enthusiasm again.

After breakfast, I filled the car with gas and did my weekend grocery shopping. The list was small this week and that was fine with me. This seemed like a day for staying home and keeping warm. Dash seemed to agree. We took a long nap together this afternoon. It certainly beat cleaning the house.

As a consumer of healthcare, I've been following the debate about how to reform the system. I have a feeling that this is going to be the next battleground that divides us even further. I was listening to a proponent of Medicare for all explain that one of the most effective ways to pay for universal healthcare would be to stop approving all these elaborate procedures for really old people. "They're all going to die soon anyway," the guy said. You can imagine how well this idea went over. It's certainly true that most of your medical expenditures are going to occur during your last ten years of life, but if you need a new knee on your eightieth birthday, are you really going to say "never mind, I'll just keep using this cane?" I wonder how this will end? When the women are all fighting the men and the young are all fighting the old, today's political skirmishes will seem like child's play.

I'd be the first to admit that the earth's population is already too large to sustain life indefinitely. I'd still like to live as long as I can though. That is the dilemma. We desperately need to slow down population growth but we all want to live. Humanity has become the ultimate Kudzu vine. Since we are at the top of the food chain, there is absolutely nothing to stop us from consuming everything in our path. There really needs to be some fire breathing dragons or evil alien invaders to keep us in our place.

I don't see how you can be a student of history and still believe that you can change human nature. We have a pretty dismal track record. This is why I'm such a fan of exploring space. We're pretty clever. Maybe we can learn to tame wormholes and conquer the speed of light before we destroy our planet and become extinct. If we thought our destiny was to expand into the universe and destroy an infinite number of other planets one by one, it would provide a tremendous source of hope.

I saw us plant a flag on the moon, but I'd have to stay pretty healthy to see the same thing happen on Mars. Population explosion or not, I'll take advantage of every medical miracle that comes my way. I'd love to see Elon Musk succeed. It would be the first step in what could become a very long journey.

Day 3203

Another month has come and gone. It's getting harder and harder to give Dash his monthly heartworm pill. The pills are large and it is difficult to hide them. When we finished the morning meds and cleaned up the poop on the floor, the first of October was pretty much the same as the end of September.

I saw some people setting up what appeared to be a small circus while Dash and I were out walking this morning. The circus folks better hope it doesn't rain. They were putting their tent in an area that routinely floods. October is packed with outdoor events. The State Fair has already started and in addition to the small circus, there was an Octoberfest celebration going on in another section of the park. I studiously avoid all these events. I don't like crowds. When the dogs were young, we took them to a few outdoor events. They usually had fun because there was almost always food involved. I don't know when the circus starts, but we'll probably change our route for a few days. It's a lot easier to deal with a dog who can barely walk and is likely to poop on your shoe in an area devoid of other people.

I was disappointed to learn that none of my trains sold in September. I was getting used to consistent sales and a check at the first of the month. Maybe October will be better. These trains would make a great gift for a railfan. Hopefully, my friend can sell quite a few during the holiday season.

I had to go to the storage warehouse and bring home another rug for Dash. Pretty soon all Dot's rugs are going to be back in the house. They're ugly, but if they help keep Dash standing, they're worth it. I took some little rugs back when I picked up the bigger ones to avoid unnecessary clutter. I got ahead of myself though. I had to go back to the storage warehouse and retrieve the little rug to fill a slippery place in the kitchen. Hopefully all is well for at least a few more weeks.

Dash has another big exam at the cancer center later this week. I wish there was something they could do that would actually make him better, rather than just monitor his decline. I hope Dash doesn't suffer from Peripheral Neuropathy in addition to all his other ailments. He's certainly starting to exhibit a lot of the classic symptoms. He definitely has a problem with his mouth. If it's an abscess or a decayed tooth, I don't know what we are going to do. Most of his doctors don't think he could survive anesthesia.

I applied for the NASA event in Houston later this month and paid a few of the early October bills. There was some last minute paperwork I needed to sign with the auction house and some routine correspondence that needed to be answered. I didn't have the energy to fight with the roofers again. I'll grit my teeth and try to do that tomorrow.

I'm glad they got a trade deal settled today. It was certainly good for the market. I'm glad Elon Musk got his problems resolved as well. I don't think he was treated fairly by the SEC at all. Few people noticed these events because everyone was fighting about other things. So far the confirmation circus has only succeeded in raising my resting heart rate. I can't think of anything else that might have caused this.

I just noticed that I've been listening to the same music over and over again at the gym. The repetitive nature of the gym's playlist wasn't readily apparent because it seems like I'm hearing a very long tape loop. I've been going to the gym long enough that I finally noticed that all the songs were always in the same order and that the list would eventually repeat. Maybe there is more to this. The people I see at the gym are always the same too and they keep doing the same exercises. I usually have the same dreams over and over and over again as well. Maybe folks like Neil deGrasse Tyson and Elon Musk are right. What if we are all living in a simulation? If serious people actually think that the universe is just an advanced civilization's version of The Matrix, it tells me one thing. It tells me that we don't really know much about anything.

Yesterday, when I was looking through the auction catalog, a photo by Laura Gilpin caught my eye. I recognized the building. Recognizing a building in a photo isn't a big deal, but this building doesn't exist anymore. It was the old saloon in Gothic Colorado. Gothic is a ghost town and I used to play in these crumbling abandoned buildings when I was a child. Our family spend summers living in an old miner's cabin in this ghost town during the late 1950's. The photo brought back a surprising number of memories, considering how young I was at the time. Simulation or not, I'll have to admit that I've had a pretty interesting life.

Dash had a bad fall while I was taking him out to pee early this morning. He slipped on the brick floor and all four legs splayed out. He couldn't get up and I was worried that he might have broken something. I lifted him up and kept him steady until he could get his bearings again. The mishap scared him and I wasn't terribly surprised that he pooped on the floor. After holding him for a few minutes, he began to take a few tentative steps. Five minutes later, he seemed back to normal. Normal for Dash means that he can stand up. It doesn't mean that he is very strong. It's just about time for Dash to start wearing the Help 'Em Up Harness like Dot did during the last years of her life. With the harness on, I'll be better able to keep him from falling.

Despite getting off to a very shaky start, it wasn't a bad day. I did see some blue sky peeking through the clouds. The weather was cool and brisk and after a rest, Dash was still eager to take his morning walk. We were really slow today, but I could tell that Dash enjoyed smelling things in the wet grass.

I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and Dash has a vet appointment on Tuesday. This is all it takes these days for me to think it's going to be a busy week. I hope Dash stays strong. He worries me a lot these days. At least he's eating well again. That's always a good sign. I need to start eating well myself. I've got to stop snacking on crackers and popcorn during the day and I need to cut out pizza entirely. We had pizza for dinner and I've already got heartburn. Hey, I've got over 15,000 steps on the Fitbit though. That ought to help.

Day 3179

I enjoyed breakfast this morning. There was real china, heavy flatware, and waiters in white coats. The place was quiet and relaxing. Although the menu was limited, my egg sandwich was delicious. Eating in a nice hotel wasn't a bad idea. I'll probably go back.

I was surprised to see how high the lake levels were this morning because we didn't get any rain yesterday. It must have rained heavily to the north of us. Whenever there are heavy rains, huge amounts of trash and litter flow into the lake from the creeks that feed it. The water definitely looked ugly this morning. When the water recedes, this litter will be left on the shoreline. Eventually, people from the Parks and Recreation Department will pick it up. It's a shame that nobody in Dallas seems to be able to throw their trash in a can, but I'm sure other cities are even worse.

I'm glad there was time to take Dash on a nice walk this morning because it was our turn to get rained on today. As the day progressed, the sky got darker and darker. It's raining right now and that means there will be no evening walk. People always say we need the rain, but I don't know why. It hasn't been a particularly dry year. I don't like rain, but I'm slowly learning to respect it. Whenever I see all the forest fires out West and the hurricanes and floods to the East, I realize that Dallas is in kind of a sweet spot. We've managed to avoid weather extremes for quite a while.

I feel sorry for Elon Musk. He's getting crucified for making a casual comment about taking his company private and then smoking pot on TV. Musk is the Thomas Edison of our generation. I think people ought to cut him some slack. Steve Jobs got treated the same way for quite a while. It's weird. If you're a businessman or a politician, you're expected to follow conventional rules. If you're a musician, anything goes.

We've discontinued the probiotic Dash was taking and his poop is slowly becoming firmer. This is counterintuitive but what do I know. The disappointing thing about veterinary and human medicine is that everything is so compartmentalized. Nobody seems all that good at evaluating the big picture. It seems obvious that health is a combination of lifestyle, diet, heredity, and medications. Doctors always focus on the pills though. Somehow, I feel that Dash would be doing better if he were eating exactly the right thing. I'd probably being doing better if I were eating exactly the right thing as well. I don't have any answers, but I do think that nutrition should be just as important as pharmacology in medical school.

I saw the auction catalog for one of the Fall auctions today. It was weird to see my picture right up there with some pretty well known art. I'm no art historian, but I recognized some of the other images up for auction immediately. I'm hoping that this might be is my Antiques Roadshow moment. I don't want to get my hopes up though. Auctions are weird and unpredictable. Nobody might bid at all. I have art in two different auctions and both are in October. Lets hope they do well.

Janet wants to take pictures of some new rescue dogs this weekend. If the weather improves, that's what we'll do. I still am unwilling to leave Dash alone in a storm, but I'm actually looking forward to taking photos again. Life is so slow, that I look forward to doing almost anything.

Day 2967

Someone has started throwing their trash in my garbage can. This shouldn't bother me, but it does. I always bag and seal my trash in big black trash bags. I have a neat and tidy bin. It just seems all wrong to see someone else's loose garbage inside this can. Since all my neighbors have their own cans, I'm beginning to think that this trash is coming from the strange new people I've seen coming and going from my neighbor's house recently. I may be wrong, but I think they've turned part of their home into an Airbnb rental. Jeez. I hope this isn't true. After I read an article about how Airbnb virtually destroyed Crested Butte for local residents, I haven't been a fan of this new form of lodging.

I wonder when I went from living on the cutting edge to being violently opposed to anything new? It must have been a gradual process, because I wasn't even aware that it was happening. These days I wonder why there isn't any good music anymore. I am baffled by all these ride sharing bicycles that have spread like kudzu vines through our city. I think social media addiction is as real as drug addiction and we would all be better off if we went back to living offline. I don't like globalism and think a factory in every small town would be much healthier than massive imports from China. Basically, I'm becoming a Luddite like my sister.

My Dad was kind of reactionary as he grew older, but I think I'm much worse than him. It's probably because I never had children. If you are a parent, you are forced to make an effort to see the world through a younger generation's eyes. Millennials seem much stranger to me than they do to friends of mine with millennial aged children of their own. Maybe everything is as it should be, but increasingly, life seems like an episode of the Twilight Zone.

I wonder how I'd view the world if I were younger myself? Maybe I'd be more tolerant. I'd probably be working in silicon valley. I'm a huge fan of Elon Musk and share his vision of a life on Mars. I can't imagine myself as a political person, but I could get excited about renewable energy and solar power. Anything that gives people more independence is a good thing. Maybe I'd do just fine as a millennial.

Growing younger isn't really in the cards, so I guess growing old gracefully is the next best thing. I get up every morning and try to make sure Dash has everything he needs. We're both grumpy old men now, but he is a good companion. We take our walks and build our days around mealtimes. It's not a bad life. I try not to panic about stock market fluctuations and I hope that Dash doesn't panic about his heartbeat fluctuations.

We had a good day today. Dash finished his entire breakfast after we returned from our morning walk and his appetite remained good for the rest of the day. The shivering episodes have subsided a bit too. Now that he's finished his four day course of Cerenia, I'm hoping that he will be stable for a while. The big event of the day was picking up some spicy Japanese Ramen for dinner. I picked up some new meds for Dash as well. We'll probably do something similar tomorrow.

Day 2966

I've been interested in space for a long time, but I never thought I'd see a sporty convertible floating above the earth with a mannequin in a space suit at the wheel. The long awaited Falcon Heavy launch was spectacular. I thought it was audacious of Elon Musk to send his own Tesla Roadster to Mars on the Falcon Heavy's maiden voyage. It was pretty cool to see the two booster rockets return to Cape Canaveral and land simultaneously as well. If this doesn't get people interested in space travel again, I don't know what will.

I defrosted the evaporator coil in the freezer today. There was definitely ice on the coil, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I probably could have gone another week before the refrigerator stopped working. It's a nuisance to take all the food out of the freezer, remove the shelves, and unscrew the back panel to gain access to the frozen coil, but melting the ice with a hair dryer seems to cure the problem every time. It seems odd now that frost free refrigerators are a relatively new development and my parents routinely defrosted their refrigerator this way.

After a thousand point drop yesterday, the stock market had a thousand point intraday swing today. The market was down over 500 points at the open and was up over 500 points at the close. It was a very volatile day for traders. At times like these I think it is best to lay low and do nothing. The economy is good and businesses are thriving, so I think the market will recover. If there wasn't so much high volume program trading by machines, the sell off probably wouldn't have happened in the first place. They say a lot of people who were shorting the volatility index because the market has been so stable lately got totally wiped out. I bet they won't do that again.

Dash seems to be feeling a little better. He still won't eat when he gets up, but his appetite seems to return about mid-morning. I don't know if this is permanent or not, but adjustments can be made. The only real problem is getting Dash to take his morning pills. If the morning and evening meds didn't have to be given twelve hours apart, it would be easy to just have Dash take the morning meds later in the day. Unfortunately, that would push the schedule for his the evening meds back until after our bedtime. Hopefully, this loss of appetite is temporary. It certainly makes life more difficult.

I hear thunder outside, but Dash still seems calm and normal. That's odd. Maybe he's growing deaf along with his many other problems. Dot was virtually deaf in the final months before she passed away and the deafness was a blessing. For the first time in her life, she wasn't scared of storms.

I have no plans for tomorrow. With no deadlines to meet, I'll fret about my jury summons. Then I'll fret about Dash's lack of appetite. Then I'll wonder why our cable bill went up again and how long my refrigerator repair will last. I don't think I'll fret about rain. The rain is supposed to be over by morning.

Day 2866

For months now, I've been sleeping on top of the bed. I think I started this when Dot was sick. I'd just take my shoes off and lay down next to Dash. This way, I was always ready to help Dot go outside at night. I'm a lazy person, and after a while it just seemed easier to sleep this way. I'm always the last one to go to bed and it wasn't worth waking Dash up after he was already asleep. No matter what time it was, he would think it was morning and go to the kitchen and bark for food. I was happy enough sleeping this way, but last night it got very cold and I got under the sheets again. I was surprised at the difference. I think I slept a lot better last night.

Although I'm a creature of habit, I can make changes. In addition to sleeping under the sheets, I've started going to the gym a lot earlier. I used to go in the afternoons on Sunday and now I go right after breakfast. I don't know why, but I seem to have more energy when I exercise early in the day. I get more done too, since I have the afternoon to clean and do projects around the house.

Since I've finished repairing all three sets of Dash's protective boots, I thought I'd try my hand at repairing my own shoes. I used to wear heavy duty leather hiking boots when I walked the dogs, but since Dash has been so flaky about walks lately I've had to wear something I could put on quickly before he got out of the mood. I had a pair of pull on rubber rain shoes that fit the bill, but I've worn them out in less than a month. Tire patches seemed perfect for reinforcing these things. I glued three large patches in strategic places on each shoe. I'll let the rubber cure for 48 hours and then I'll put them through their paces. These shoes are incredibly ugly and Janet is embarrassed when I wear them in public but they may turn out to be the perfect dog walking shoe. After I added some orthotics for arch support, they are quite comfortable. They are completely waterproof and I can put them on in seconds. The soft rubber didn't hold up very well on the trails, but maybe my tire patches will solve that problem.

When I went to the gym today, there was an open newspaper next to one of the machines I use. I noticed a headline that said "In the future people are going to need bigger brains to survive." This sounded intriguing, so I read the article before I started my workout. The premise was that advances in artificial intelligence and robotics are occurring more rapidly than our own ability to deal with the changes they are causing. Apparently it is just a matter of time before artificial intelligence is smarter than we are. I can believe this. Robots are designing other robots now. Our entire society moves around with their faces glued to their phones. Who is the master and who is the slave? I think I share Elon Musk's worries about AI. In less than fifty years it is going to change everything.

My machines are simple. I can take most of them apart and put them back together again. I actually understand how a lot of them work. This is changing rapidly unfortunately. I remember modifying my first computer by soldering new stuff to the motherboard. I couldn't begin to do that anymore. I have no idea how WiFi works and I kind of think the cloud is evil. I think I am more comfortable in a world where I can fix a pair of shoes with tire patches and get a refrigerator running again by defrosting the evaporator coil with a hair dryer.

Dash had a good week. I hope next week is even better. I still don't really know what has changed. We've basically have let him choose his own food and are dressing him up in rubber boots. That's not enough to cause the changes we've seen. He's still got the two large blood clots in his heart and is dealing with vestibular disease. Even with the best doctors, health often remains a mystery. I guess the best thing is just to be happy for the good days and be prepared for the bad days.

Day 2479

I listened to Elon Musk give a presentation on how he planned to colonize Mars this afternoon. The guy actually plans to do this. Part of the presentation was an animation showing how the journey to the red planet would take place. "This isn't just an artist conception," Elon said. "These are the actual rockets we are getting ready to build." The animation was evidently developed from CAD drawings created by the Space X engineering department. Each space ship was designed to carry 100 people and Elon envisioned that a fleet of 1000 of them would be required to establish a permanent, self sustaining settlement on Mars. I love epic plans. The guys who built the pyramids probably thought like this. I'm convinced that when you are constrained by practicality, you really limit yourself. During the question and answer session after the presentation, someone asked how the Mars colonists would be selected. "First of all, they would need to be very comfortable with the idea of dying." "This is going to be very dangerous," Elon said. I have no idea how you would pay for a grand venture like this, but I hope Elon succeeds.

I had no grand plans today, but there were certain things that needed to be done. Dash has been having episodes that look a bit like mini-seizures, so I wanted to get his phenobarbital levels checked. I remember this test being kind of tricky, so I went to the vet to see what I needed to do before I brought him in. I scheduled the test for tomorrow morning and Dash will need to fast for at least 12 hours before they draw his blood. That's going to be fun. Dash gets real irritable when he can't eat whenever he wants. Hopefully, I can take him on a long walk while Dot eats her breakfast and then go straight to the vet.

The powdered graphite I got yesterday worked like a charm and now the sticking locks around the house are smooth as silk. I haven't gotten up my nerve to fix the leaking shower stall yet. Usually when I try this, I end up wanting to take a shower before the silicon caulk is completely dry and the seal doesn't stick. I still don't know why somebody doesn't make a product that dries in an hour and can be applied to damp surfaces.

Dot had quite a few accidents today. I've learned to minimize the mess by always placing disposable puppy training pads under her while she is sleeping. All I need to do is carefully slide the pad out after she poops and replace it with a fresh pad. When I was cleaning things up today, I noticed another kind of mess. Dot had thrown up again. This is the second time this month. I think she may have acid reflux since she spends so much time lying down on her bed. Maybe I'm wrong though. I'll ask the vet tomorrow when I take Dash in for his test.

I saw a Red Shouldered Hawk when I was walking Dash this morning. There are lots of hawks and owls in the neighborhood, but they seldom stay still long enough to photograph. I got lucky today. Tomorrow, it's back to looking for the occasional wildflower that hasn't dried up yet. Tomorrow will be busy. I hope that Dash's test goes smoothly and we don't have to increase the amount of phenobarbital he takes. Life is complicated enough as it is.

Day 2306

The garbage truck didn't pick up my trash this morning. My can was lined up on the street, just like all the other cans, but the truck drove right by and ignored it. I saw this in the distance as we were returning from our walk with Dot and Dash, but there was nothing I could do. As we got closer, I saw the recycle truck approach and asked the guys if they could take my trash. They said it wasn't in a blue recycle can, so they couldn't help me. "But it's all nicely bagged," I said, holding up one of the black trash bags as they drove away. You can't argue with garbageman. Damn. Now there isn't going to be enough room for next week's trash. Janet told me that I have a serious case of OCD if I was fretting about the trash can, but that's how I roll.

I don't think I'd make a good food critic. My breakfast was delicious at the new restaurant this morning, but all I could think about were the people sitting next to me. I felt out of place. Everyone was nicely dressed and there were way too many children. Even well behaved children are too noisy for me. One of the features of this place was a series of large roll-up doors that could be opened to let the outside in. They decided the weather was nice enough to open all the doors about halfway through my meal and immediately I felt too cold. It didn't seem to bother anybody else and many customers chose to sit outside on the patio. I'm sure I'll go back again, but the restaurant felt a bit too upscale for me. I felt more comfortable in the little hole in the wall place I ate last Friday with all the hipster beards.

It was cloudy all day, so I didn't get a chance to see Mercury right next to the moon after sunset. I did watch the live feed of the Space X Dragon launch though and was amazed to see the first stage booster rocket successfully land on a barge in the Atlantic Ocean after lofting its cargo into orbit. The barge wasn't much bigger than the rocket. I was very impressed. If I were younger, I'd love to work for Space X. These guys are amazing. I'm certainly no rocket scientist, but I'm sure they have a graphics department. If anyone can get us to Mars, it is probably Elon Musk.

Work was slow all day and then I got an assignment right at the end of the day when I was getting ready to shut down the computer. This happens frequently now. My work isn't a priority anymore. People forget about me until the end of the day, when they want to go home. I could probably wait until Monday to start this assignment, but my work ethic and compulsive nature will probably force me to do the job tomorrow morning.

Dot is completely unpredictable. After yesterday's series of disasters, I wasn't expecting much today. When I went out to mow the grass, I was sure there would be a smelly mess when I returned. Ditto for when I went to pick up take-out burgers for dinner. So far, it's been clear sailing all the way. Knock on wood, but maybe I'll even get a good night sleep tonight.
