Day 3012

I was determined to fix the toilet today. I printed out a parts list and drove to the only plumbing supply store in town that has just about everything. The store was closed. If I was thinking, I should have known the store would be closed. Just about the only people who go to this store are plumbers. Have you ever tried getting a plumber on a Saturday?

When I finished the rest of my Saturday errands, I took the flush valve apart and cleaned everything again. This time I must have done something right. When I reassembled the valve and turned the water back on, the water level in the tank was almost an inch lower and the flush valve leak had been reduced to a slow drip. I probably still need new parts, but at least I accomplished something. I'm convinced that Porcher and Citroën must have had some connection in the part. Both French companies feature very clever engineering and make products that are virtually impossible to fix. I have owned several Citroën automobiles. They are wonderful cars to drive but you never want to break down on a lonely stretch of highway. I reluctantly sold my last Citroën when the only Citroën mechanic in Texas retired.

Dash woke me up last night and went racing for the back door. I thought I got the door opened in time. I watched Dash go out in the yard and poop. What I didn't see until the next morning was that he really didn't make it to the yard after all. It was dark and I didn't notice that he'd pooped right on top of the door threshold. When I closed the door and locked up, I inadvertently squished the poop under the bottom of the door and made a huge mess. It was a very unpleasant job to clean the aluminum threshold and underside of the door. The entire door had become a poop sandwich. I thought I was going to get a break from cleaning up poop after Dot passed away, but Dash is already following in her footsteps.

Dash didn't want to take an afternoon walk today. I sure wish this dog could talk. I don't want to make him walk if he's feeling tired or uncomfortable, but it would be nice to know how he felt about things before I spent a lot of time getting him suited up in his protective gear. If he won't walk, I have to remove all the gear because he can't get up on the bed with his boots and leg brace on. We go through this ritual several times every afternoon and I never know what the outcome is going to be. Sometimes he walks and other times he doesn't.

At least the large printer is working again. I finally managed to get the thing unclogged. The printer is making nice prints, but it looks like I'm already going to have to order some more ink. I ended up using half of the expensive ink I received recently running five cleaning cycles. Why do I still have this printer? Probably for the same reason I still have several Beta-SP tape decks. It's a bitch when you've become obsolete.

The grass is already starting to grow in the front yard again. It's almost time to see whether the lawn mower battery survived the winter. I really don't like mowing the lawn, but it's probably no worse than getting the water off the roof or fixing the toilet.

Day 1985

Things are looking up. The U-verse technician was already out in the alley working on the line when we took the dogs on their morning walk. By the time we returned, our Internet was working again. I'm still not sure how U-verse actually works but I'm glad it's up and running. U-verse is supposed to be a super fast fiber optic connection, but a copper wire actually comes into the house. This copper wire is necessary, because very few televisions, computers, and phones will connect directly to a fiber optic cable. I'm sure the copper slows things down though. U-verse isn't really much faster than anything else. To the technicians credit, our Internet is faster than it was last week though. I guess the technician accomplished something.

I got my car back today as well. It's nice driving a decent sized car again. I've never felt comfortable in small cars. Before I had dogs, I used to drive Citroëns. The Citroën is the Tardis of automobiles. These eccentric French cars don't look that big on the outside but the interiors seem huge. Having Dalmatians made me a believer in driving something even bigger than a Citroën, and I've had various SUV's ever since. The gas mileage is horrible, but the trips to the vet are a lot easier.

Luckily, we didn't have to go to the vet today, because the rain continued unabated. I don't know what I used to do before I had weather radar on my phone. I totally depend on the radar app now, checking it multiple times a day to find the perfect time to run errands and walk the dogs. I used to live in Seattle, and it never used to rain like this. Who would have thought that Texas would be wetter than Seattle someday. The rain has become a nuisance, but things are sure looking green. I think when July arrives, we're going to appreciate our exceptionally wet Spring.

I worked on websites again this afternoon. I don't typically work on weekends, but there's a lot of stuff I need to get finished and what else are you going to do on a rainy day anyway? If you've got a kid who can't find a job, tell them to learn how to build mobile websites. I noticed that the mobile traffic on my own website went up dramatically since I converted it to a mobile friendly design last week. This either means that Google really favors mobile now, or that I was getting no mobile traffic at all before I made the switch. Creating mobile websites is going to be a boom industry for a while. I suspect that every single website on the planet will eventually find it necessary to scrap their static sites in an effort to attract mobile traffic as well.

Janet and I are getting forgetful. Dash had a birthday a few days ago and we completely forgot about it. We tried to make amends by having a little party for the boy this evening. We used to make special cakes for the dogs and everything. I even went to a cake decorating class once, just to learn how to make the ultimate dog cake. Today the dogs got a doggie cupcake from Sprinkles, and more importantly they got to share some of the burgers we were having for dinner. It's hard to believe that Dash is ten now. I still go around telling people he is seven. How time flies.

Neither of the dogs understands that holiday weekends are for sleeping in. They got us up early this morning and I suspect that they will do the same tomorrow. It's OK though. I'm glad both dogs are still energetic and eager to start the day after all they've been through the past year. I'll be checking the weather radar again tomorrow to see if I can find them a little dry time.

Day 1610

I sold the Citroën SM today. It would have been nice to see the car one last time, but the aircraft hanger where I've been keeping it for all these years was too far away. The buyer, a nice young Dutch guy who seemed very excited about restoring the car, just came over to the house and gave me the money in exchange for the car's title. I think the old non-running Citroën Maserati will be packed in a shipping container and be loaded on a boat to be restored in Holland.

I was always hoping to restore the car myself, but it just wasn't meant to be. The car has been moving from one mechanic to another for almost fifteen years now. These increasingly rare mechanics, the ones who were familiar with working on Citroën automobiles, kept retiring, downsizing their life, or just losing interest before they ever got around to fixing my car. When my current mechanic admitted that he'd probably never find time to fix the car either before he retired himself, I finally realized it was finally time to give it up. Citroëns belong in a museum now. It's a shame. The SM is still one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. It was Motor Trend's Car of the Year in 1972. Those were the best of times. We were still going to the moon back then and I was one of the youngest creative directors in Seattle. I drove the car to work every day in the early 1970's. Those days are just are a distant memory now. I know I took photos, but I can't even find a picture of the car anymore.

Dot did really well during her physical therapy session today. I'm a little concerned that she's losing interest though. She used to be really excited to go for her acupuncture and water therapy, but now she seems reluctant to get in the car. We've slowed the pace down a bit, but I still worry a bit that the exercise might be hard on her. It's got to be helping though. No other Dalmatian I've ever had has been anywhere near this healthy and active at Dot's age. It doesn't matter if you're an old Dalmatian or an old ad guy; exercise and a good diet are essential cornerstones in maintaining a healthy life. So, even though Dot and I would both prefer to be eating and sleeping, we'll continue to stay as active as we can.

A cold front passed through town along with yesterday's rain. It must have been 40 degrees cooler at our house this morning. I even had to turn the furnace on again. The dogs loved the cooler weather though and took one of their longest walks this month. This won't last long unfortunately. It is supposed to be back in to 90's again before the end of the week.

I have a feeling that much of what currently resides in my storage warehouse will eventually suffer the same sad fate as my cherished Citroën Maserati. Like they all say, you can't take it with you.

Day 1326

I need help. Maybe you guys could help point me towards my next car. I love my Defender 90, but it's becoming increasingly apparent that keeping an eighteen year old car roadworthy and reliable is a losing proposition. The Defender has entered that phase of a car's life where is ceases to be transportation and becomes an expensive hobby instead. I'm getting tired of guessing which part is going to fall off next, but I can't find anything even remotely affordable that I would rather drive.

My taste in cars has always been rather eclectic. At one time or another I've owned an International Harvester Metro-Mite Van, a silver Citroën Maserati, a Citroën DS-21, a humongous diesel Ford F-350 dually crew cab pickup, a white Ford Bronco identical to the one OJ drove during the famous low speed chase, and of course the Defender 90. I've always been partial to cars that look like they could survive a Zombie apocalypse. I almost bought a Hummer H-1 once, although I hated the H-2 and H-3. I'm fond of the Mercedes Geländewagen as well, but this one is a bit pricy for someone like me. There just aren't many vehicles available that are built like a tank, have full time four wheel drive, and can carry a full size metal dog crate in the back. The Defender is perfect. I just wish Land Rover would bring some new ones back to the United States again while I'm still alive.

As you might guess, I'm still trying to find a new vibration damper for my aluminum V8 engine. By the time I eventually find this illusive part, it is almost inevitable that something else will have fallen off the car and need my attention. I'm tenacious though and made another trip to the Land Rover dealer this morning to get this issue resolved. This was only one of many errands on my list today. I also stopped by my doctor's office to get my blood tested, paid a visit to my equipment supplier to look for a mattebox, and got some weekend groceries at Central Market.

Like last week, I didn't make it to my favorite breakfast restaurant until almost noon. While I was waiting for my meal I listened to three guys at the next table talking about the George Zimmerman trial. As strange as it may seem, one guy was explaining the trial to the other two, who had never even heard about it. On the other side of me was a fat little girl wearing sunglasses who looked exactly like Honey Boo Boo. She had an entourage of adults sitting with her who were continually taking pictures of the kid with their cell phones. This probably wasn't really Honey Boo Boo though. I bet is was just a normal family who likes to post status updates of their grandchildren on Facebook every five minutes.

One of my clients asked me to take some companies who had gone out of business off his website customer list today. I probably ought to do the same thing with my own website. Quite a few of my customers have either gone out of business or been gobbled up by bigger companies over the years. A long list looks better than a short list though. Maybe I'll just leave things the way they are.

Day 919

Like many of you, I missed the Summer Solstice this year. It was yesterday. How did that happen? I thought the longest day of the year was always on June 21. Today still seemed pretty long and very hot anyway. I'm afraid that Summer has arrived in earnest.

During breakfast, I watched the "Girl in the Fireplace" episode of Dr. Who for probably the fourth time. This is one of my favorite episodes, surpassed only by "Vincent and the Doctor." What's the connecting link? Maybe it's just that both of these episodes take place in France. Paris is my favorite city. For many years a Citroën was my automobile of choice. I drove a Citroën in Seattle, and against all logic, I drove a Citroën when I first moved to Dallas. In a world of Ford F-150 pickups, this car definitely didn't blend in.

I don't know what it is about France. I'm drawn to Philippe Stark furniture, even though it is wildly impractical. I even have a French Porcher toilet. I wouldn't recommend French plumbing products however. When they start to leak, it is almost impossible to find replacement parts. It's pretty hard to find parts for Citroën automobiles in Texas as well. That's why I switched to Land Rovers.

I found myself thinking about guitars again today. I've got a birthday gift card that's burning a hole in my pocket. Maybe I can find myself a nice used Les Paul. A real Les Paul is probably too expensive. I'd likely have to settle for the less expensive Epiphone version. I'm getting way ahead of myself though. I need to go to a guitar store, sit down with a guitar, and see if I can still play. My carpel tunnel is getting pretty bad in my left hand. If it hurts to squeeze a tennis ball, I have a feeling that playing a guitar might not feel so good either. We'll see.
