Day 4756

Not a lot happened today. I still can't get over how different Dawn seems when everyone is home. She is a happy dog again. After an energetic early morning walk, I made the bed and ate my breakfast. I went back to my weekday breakfast of shredded wheat and fruit because Janet left early to catch up on her grocery shopping.

I returned to mall walking today. I was actually a little surprised the mall was open on New Year's Day because it was closed on Christmas. Most of the Christmas decorations had already disappeared and all the store windows displayed large sale signs. If you were in the market for overpriced clothes, this would be a good time. I was surprised to see a huge line outside the Lego store. Something big was happening, but there was no indication in the store window. I have seen similar lines outside the Swatch and Nike stores in the past and didn't know what was going on there either. Clearly I am not on the need to know list for these type of events. Lots of adults seem to be interested in Lego products. I had always thought this was a store for kids.

On the way home I listened to a program on NPR about how a largely unknown hockey player named John Scott was voted by fans to be a team captain on the 2016 all star team. This vote angered the NHL and they asked him to decline the honor. When he refused the league orchestrated a trade to a minor league team in Canada where he was ineligible to play on the all star team. I had never realized that there was so much intrigue and pettiness in the world of hockey. Not surprisingly there was a big fan backlash and the league was forced to reinstate Scott as a team captain. I don't know what happened after that, because I had arrived back home.

When I returned from mall walking, I found Dawn waiting to go on her Sunday outing. She definitely hasn't forgotten her normal routine. I didn't even need a jacket for this walk. It was a surprisingly warm day, especially considering that we were all freezing just a few weeks ago. Dawn definitely had more energy than I did. By the time we returned to the car, I was walking well behind Dawn and Janet. Of course we all had to have an ice cream cone before we returned home. Dawn hasn't forgotten about ice cream cones either.

I had vague thoughts about doing something productive when I woke up this morning, but that never materialized. Sundays are seldom productive. I basically just walk on Sundays although I don't really accumulate that many steps. I am still fascinated by Fitbit results. My heart rate is remarkably consistent when I walk at the mall. This is probably because I am walking in a flat, climate controlled environment. When I walk outside in the park, my heart rate is all over the place. My outdoor walks are clearly better exercise, but it gets boring sometimes. I was glad I went to the mall today.

I wonder when I am going to hear something about the upcoming falcon heavy launch? I thought I would have received my credentials by now, but I have heard nothing. My connections to the world of rocketry are tenuous at best and I'm always worried that I'll fall off the approved list. I don't think that NASA or the magazine I write for care nearly as much as I do about this. Old retired guys like me still need some legitimacy and validation.

I have no idea what I'll be doing tomorrow. Hey, it's a new year, so I guess anything is possible.

Day 3655

I don't know why I never thought of this before. I started looking for observatories near Dallas and found more than I expected. Most of these telescopes were fairly small and were maintained by local colleges and universities. Some had public access and others didn't. One even offered private viewing opportunities. All of these small observatories were located in rural areas with very dark skies but were still close enough to a town that I could stay in a motel if I didn't feel like driving back to Dallas in the middle of the night. This is worth exploring further. Before I become a star guide at McDonald Observatory, I probably need a refresher course in what I'm actually looking at.

I didn't have the proper ingredients for my smoothie this morning, so I just threw everything I had in the Vitamix and drank it anyway. Surprising, adding a carrot to the remaining fruit wasn't half bad. After breakfast I went to the grocery store and got enough food to last me through the weekend. It looks like it is going to rain tomorrow and I wanted to have the option of staying dry at home.

My household chore for the day was defrosting the small refrigerator. This was supposed to just be an  emergency refrigerator to use when our big refrigerator in the kitchen was broken. The refrigerator was fixed long ago and we still use the little one. Defrosting this thing reminds me of the days when the TV didn't have a remote, ovens weren't self-cleaning, and light bulbs burned out every few months. It's amazing how we just take our automated lives for granted these days.

The park has been full of people all week. This period between Christmas and New Year's is confusing, since every day seems like Sunday. Lots of folks were trying out new bicycles and scooters today. For the past several years I've been seeing people learning to fly their new drones right after Christmas. I've been led to believe that these things practically fly themselves, but there must be some skill involved. A lot of new drone pilots are terrible. I saw a guy this afternoon repeatedly crash his Christmas toy while his girlfriend laughed at him.

It looks like all the leaves are off the trees now. I can't decide whether to rake and bag the leaves myself or hire the landscape guy to do it. Janet and I used to rake leaves every Fall and then one year it just seemed like a lot of trouble. Some years we got someone to remove the leaves for us and other years we just left them on the ground. By Spring, most of them had blown away anyway. I don't know why I'm even thinking of raking leaves this year. I must not have enough to do.

I've been getting a lot of notices about big after Christmas sales in my e-mail lately, but I still don't feel like buying anything. This is unexpected. Back in the day, I always felt like I needed a new camera or microphone. Gadgets just don't interest me as much anymore. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Where do you go when gadgets fail to excite you?

Hard to believe we are approaching the end of another decade. New Year's Eve 1999 still seems like it was yesterday. That's a little unsettling. Even in the best of worlds, it's doubtful that I have another twenty years left.

Day 1838

It was cold when we walked the dogs this morning, but as it turned out, this was as warm as it was going to get. As the day progressed it continued to get colder and colder. Now, it looks like it might freeze tonight. Of course tomorrow, the temperature will be back up in the fifties again. I'll never be able to get used to Texas weather.

When I was out shopping this afternoon, I saw several neighborhood Christmas tree lots packing up their tents and disposing of their unsold trees. A Christmas tree lot the day after Christmas is a sad sight. I wonder what these guys do the rest of the year?

The stores had huge sales on wrapping paper and Christmas ornaments today. I know people that always buy their wrapping paper this way. I don't think that far ahead. I just look for what's lying around the house on Christmas Eve. When I was getting groceries, I saw a crowd flocking to one particular aisle. I pushed my buggy toward the melee to see what all the commotion was about and discovered that all the Christmas candy and sweets were half price. I don't eat many sweets myself but got caught up in the moment and ended up buying a box of half price Godiva chocolates.

I seem to have reached some sort of plateau with the stretching exercises that are supposed to help my shoulder. I was making real progress for the first few days, but now I seem to have hit a brick wall. Maybe, this is as far as my bad shoulder is going to move. It's not that the joint is increasing painful to move, it just won't move at all beyond a certain point. I can lie on a flat surface and extend my left shoulder all the way behind my head with a full 180 degrees of motion. The right shoulder will only extend about twenty degrees past a vertical position. Today, I kept thinking that this is as good as it's going to get, but I'm sure that my physical therapist will think otherwise. We'll see how far she can pull and stretch my sore arm on Monday.

I was worried that the dogs would be too cold today and started to bundle them up in their Winter sweaters. Now that the dogs are both wearing their red Ruffwear harnesses on walks, it's kind of a challenge to add sweaters and coats. These Web Master harnesses are kind of like a coat themselves. Do you put the sweater under or over the harness? I eventually gave up, which is probably what the dogs wanted anyway. They like the cold a lot more than I do. I continue to be amazed at how briskly Dot walks along on these cold mornings.

The rubber snake didn't work. I think all I did was make the bird mad. It not only pooped on the car, it even pooped on the rubber snake. I'll try a different color rubber snake tomorrow, but I definitely think this irritating bird is winning the battle at this point.

I don't really feel like going to the gym tomorrow, but I probably should anyway. I told my physical therapist that I try to go to the gym at least twice a week. Jeez, I'm still having trouble making it even once a week. I think these guys can tell when you're not doing your homework.
