Day 2358

Some days you shouldn't get out of bed. Today was one small blunder after another. I decided to wash a bunch of small rugs that are hard to vacuum and the rubber backing came off in the dryer, leaving the rugs and the dryer in much worse shape than when I started. I eventually got the dryer cleaned up, but in the process ended up spilling a bottle of liquid Tide in the utility room. Laundry detergent is much harder to clean up than little bits of burned rubber in the dryer drum. As soon as I managed to get all the rugs clean and back on the floor, Dot pooped on one of them and it had to go back in the washer all over again. It was that kind of a day.

I never did make it to the gym because I couldn't seems to get finished with my list of chores. The chores weren't hard. I just didn't have my wits about me today. It didn't help matters that the dogs were both restless. Every time I'd get started cleaning something, one of them would want to go outside. I took Dot out half a dozen times and she just stood around for a minute or two and wanted to come in again. This is actually fairly normal behavior for dogs, but when you have to act as their rear legs, it can take a lot of time. Maybe they were edgy because of the weather. The weather certainly was strange today.

The sky was clear and blue when I took Dash on his afternoon walk. It was perfect holiday weather and the park was filled with families having picnics. Not more than five minutes after we returned home, I heard a giant thunderclap and it started pouring rain. Where did this rain come from? I didn't even notice any dark clouds on our walk. I bet there were quite a few picnics ruined this afternoon.

The internet is still working fine, which is amazing since I did nothing to fix the problems I've been having. Everything started working the minute the UPS man delivered the replacement router that AT&T sent me. I think I'm going to pay the penalty and keep the new router as a good luck charm. I'm convinced that as soon as I return the equipment to AT&T, my problems will resume and I'll have to ask tech support to send the router back. It's much easier just to keep it. For the time being, the lucky router will just sit in its box as a spare. I'm sure it will eventually be put into service. Nothing stays working that long in our house.

Tomorrow is a holiday, but we had out holiday meal today. Janet cooked a pork shoulder roast in the slow cooker and it was delicious. Now, that I think about it, this is what probably made the dogs restless and active today. When there's meat cooking in the crock pot, the dogs can smell it all day long. Now that dinner is finished, the house is quiet and peaceful again. Dot and Dash are both sleeping and I'm looking forward to calling it a day myself.

Day 1510 - Groundhog Day

Damn you Punxsutawney Phil. The last thing we need right now is six more weeks of Winter. It looks like that's what we're going to get though; starting with today. Luckily, we didn't get the freezing rain that was forecast. We did get a lot of very cold rain that was only a degree or two above freezing though. I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for Spring.

Bruno Mars was the best thing about the Superbowl. He brought more energy to his short halftime performance than Peyton Manning exhibited during the entire game. What happened Denver? This contest was billed as the league's best offense against the league's best defense. Unless I missed something, the Denver offense was nonexistent.

The commercials were terrible this year.  I always like the Budweiser commercials, but their dogs and horses formula is something they perfected long ago. The only commercial that showed any degree of originality was the somewhat self-depreciating Radio Shack spot. Going into a Radio Shack store really is like going back to the 80's. By humorously acknowledging that history has passed them by, maybe the company is creating an environment for change. Who knows. They probably don't know how to change though and will continue to fail in a spectacular way, just like J.C. Penny.

Change is difficult. I'd be the first to acknowledge that people and companies get set in their ways. Even the relatively minor changes I'm having to make as a result of my shoulder injury, are driving me crazy. I'm really having problems with hiring a dog walker. I'm usually the one ranting and railing about irresponsible dog walkers in the neighborhood, so it's hard for me to trust one of these people myself. I'm sure there are excellent dog walkers, but I've seen some of them do some really stupid things down in the park and was glad they weren't responsible for any of my dogs.

Maybe there's a solution though. A friend let me borrow a waist leash today. I gave the contraption a trial run this afternoon and it actually seems to work as promised. A sturdy dog leash is attached to a belt that goes around your waist, allowing you to walk even large dogs hands-free. I see joggers using these things occasionally, but I'd never used one myself. Surprisingly, the leash seemed to work. I'll have to walk the dogs separately, but I was able to give Dash a good, well controlled walk without using my hands.

Instead of our usual Superbowl burgers, Janet cooked braised porkchops in the slow cooker and served them on top of an arugula and pear salad. The combination was delicious and the porkchops were unbelievably tender. I love the slow cooker. I guess it all goes to prove that it doesn't matter if the weather is terrible and the Superbowl is a bust, as long as you end things with a great meal.

Day 1482

There were a lot of people at the gym today. Most of them were walking or running around the large, oval indoor track. It certainly made sense to me. Dallas has a lot of joggers and it was very cold today. If I were a runner, I'd certainly rather run indoors on a day like this. I still saw a few outdoor runners when I walked the dogs, but these were the masochists. There are those who think they aren't getting a good workout unless they are putting their body through some kind of hell. I'm not one of those people. There will be no Ironman marathons for me.

There were some rather large people working out near me today. Sometimes I'm amazed at how strong fat people can be. They may have a heart attack at any minute, but they can certainly bench press more than me. Lifting weights isn't one of my strong points. I've got good core strength though. I can do a plank forever.

As might be expected, the dogs weren't all that excited about going outside today. Who could blame them? Did I mention it was cold? We didn't bother to go to the dog park today and Dot and Dash were content to nap on their dog beds, conveniently located near a warm heater vent. I don't like the cold much more than I like the rain. I'd like a climate like Hawaii where it was mild all year long with no obvious seasons. In my Hawaii there'd be no hurricanes though, and nobody would have discovered the place yet, so property values would be low. A lot of things I like only exist in my mind.

Janet got a crock pot for Christmas and she decided to try it out today. I don't think either of us realized just how slow a slow cooker actually is. Five hours wasn't nearly enough. Tonight's dinner will end up being tomorrow's dinner instead. That's OK. While we're waiting, the house sure smells good. I've always liked the idea of one pot meals. Make something good in a big pot and then eat the leftovers for the rest of the week. It's tasty, it's easy, and there aren't many dishes to wash.

My workload has been pretty light for the past several weeks, but I'm afraid things will be returning to normal tomorrow. By tomorrow, just about all the holiday travelers will have returned to their cubicles. Maybe some of my clients in the Northern states will still be snowed in though. No hurry guys. You can wait till Summer to start sending me stuff if you'd like.
