Day 3157

Today was disappointing. Yesterday I thought I'd already sold one of my guitars. Today I learned that the guy who put it on layaway changed his mind. That wasn't the only surprise. I also learned that the guitar store wants me to take care of repairing the broken synthesizers. Originally, they were going to handle this themselves, but I guess they got cold feet. I can understand. It's difficult to estimate the cost of repairing old things. It wouldn't be hard to invest more money in repairs than the synthesizers were worth. I'll go ahead and get the instruments repaired on my dime, but it sure would have made life easier to let the store handle this.

Maybe life just isn't meant to be easy. When I went up on the roof today, I discovered a small defective area that the roofers inexplicably failed to fix. The roofers may have missed this bad spot, but the rain found it easy enough. Now I've got to convince the roofers to come out again. That won't be a a pleasant task.

A client that I'd thought I'd lost about six months ago now wants me to do more work for him. Strangely, I have mixed feelings about this. I'm getting used to the idea of being fully retired. It's also good to have an income, so I'll definitely do the work. I just wasn't as happy to get this new job as I should have been. I guess I don't know what I want anymore. When I'm idle, I think that work and deadlines would add structure and a sense of purpose to my life. When I actually get a job, it just seems like a giant nuisance.

Dash has added a new wrinkle to his bag of tricks. He wakes me up at night, acting like he really needs to go outside and pee. As soon as he gets outside he just stands there looking confused. He'll wander around aimlessly for a long time and then come back inside without doing anything. We repeated this process three times last night before he actually peed. When I finally thought I might be able to get back to sleep, he got me out of bed again. This time he needed to poop. I was outside at least 45 minutes with Dash between 2 and 3 AM. Needless to say, by the time he had finally done his business I was wide awake. I don't know what makes Dash seem dazed and confused at night, but it seems to be getting worse.

This morning he was fine, even though I was exhausted. If Dash does his business quickly, I can usually get back to sleep very easily. When he keeps me up for hours at a time, it's hardly worth the trouble to go back to bed. Once I'm fully awake I might as well just stay up.

Hopefully things will be better tonight. I don't know how much more sleep deprivation I can take. I don't think Dash is really worried about losing sleep. He sleeps all day.

Day 2261

Every time we have a day like this, it's easy for me to forget that we've actually had a very mild Winter. I'm trying to be charitable here, but I can't think of many nice things to say about today. It was nasty outside. The combination of high winds and heavy rain made it miserable to walk the dogs. Luckily, there was a short break in the rain when we took Dot on her early walk, but later when I walked Dash, we got soaked. It's been raining continuously for almost 24 hours and shows no sign of stopping yet.

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that Dot was tired today. It could have been the rain and cold weather. It could have been the cumulative effects of the Palladia pills. It could have been further evidence of her losing battle with the aging process. I feel bad for her on days like this. She still needs to go outside and pee and do a minimal amount of walking around to keep her legs from getting stiff, but she tires easily. We took a shorter walk than normal this morning, and when we returned she was exhausted.

Dot slept for the rest of the day while I picked up my car at the dealership and took Dash to his vet appointment. I was surprised that they fixed my car so quickly. It's a shame that the weather was so bad today. The dealer always cleans and washes my car after a service appointment, but by the time I finished driving home and taking Dash to his vet appointment, all this effort was wasted. The car was already dirty inside and out.

Dash wasn't sick, but with all Dot's problems he's been a bit neglected. I wanted to check and see if he needed his teeth cleaned. He does! He's been having digestive issues lately, so I wanted to make sure he didn't have Giardia or some other nasty parasite that could be causing his diarrhea. He has a small growth on his tail that I wanted to make sure was still benign. The vet checked him thoroughly and expressed his anal glands for good measure. Dash is OK and I feel much better now.

The awful weather and Dot's general state of exhaustion were probably one of the reasons why she pooped in the house twice today. It can take her a long time to poop on a normal day and today wasn't normal. Every time I took her outside, I could tell she didn't want to be out in the cold. To her, it probably made a lot more sense to just poop in her sleep. One of her favorite blankets appears to be indestructible. I've washed it so many times that it should have begun to fray and come apart at the seams long ago. It still looks as good as new, even though I washed the blanket twice today.

Despite all the errands I needed to run, I still managed to get quite a bit done. I finished updating a website and completed the first of three articles that are due this week. I think that's plenty for one day. I've still got a cough, but my cold is definitely getting better.

Day 1333

Dash had another seizure this morning. This new episode comes only a few weeks after the previous one, so it looks like the days of one seizure every four years are over. I'm beginning to recognize the different stages a dog goes through during a seizure, so I'm not quite as panicked now when these episodes begin. Seizures are still frightening events though. They can occasionally become life threatening events, so it's still important to take your dog to a vet as soon as you can after a seizure has occurred. Luckily Dash's seizures have never been prolonged or life threatening, so I've never had to deal with the complexities of getting him to the vet while he is still having convulsions.

Dash's veterinarian wanted to keep him for observation for the rest of the morning, and I reluctantly agreed with her that it was time to put him back on phenobarbital again. I hate the thought of Dash being on a strong barbiturate like phenobarbital for the rest of his life, but the thought of these seizures becomeing more frequent and more severe is even worse.

While Dash was at the vet, I drove up to the Land Rover dealer to see if the harmonic balancer I'd ordered had arrived yet. It turns out that the part had actually arrived several days ago, but they'd never gotten around to telling me about it. I guess we all have different priorities. I want to get this engine vibration problem resolved as quickly as I can. When it's 106 degrees outside and you have a dog in the car, the last thing you need are mechanical problems. I'm still driving the Defender, but at least I've got a service appointment scheduled for next week now.

I stopped for breakfast at a restaurant near the Land Rover dealer on the way home. This place has gotten rave reviews, but I was a bit disappointed. I guess I've gotten spoiled, since one of the best breakfast spots in the entire state is right in my own neighborhood. Maybe I just can't handle salt anymore. My meal was tasty, but it was way too salty for my taste.

Dash was completely normal when he returned from the vet, but it took me a bit longer to get the house back to normal. It is common for dogs to salivate excessively and urinate during a seizure and the bed was a mess. Not only did I have to wash the pillow cases, sheets, and comforter, I had to take the mattress pad off and wash it as well. I really feel bad when Dash has these seizures. His appear suddenly, usually on waking up, and are quite violent. Dot seems to be able to anticipate her infrequent seizures and has learned to go to a quiet place and lie down before the seizure starts.

Since there was also quite a bit of work to complete during this eventful day, I'm exhausted now. I think I got everything finished though. The dogs are resting quietly, the bed linen has been cleaned, all pending articles have been completed and e-mailed to the clients, website fixes are in place, and August invoices are in the mail. I hope the weekend is completely boring and uneventful.
