Day 2136

There's going to be another opportunity to apply for NASA press credentials to cover a resupply mission to the International Space Station in early December. I'd love to go, but predictably, I'm already making excuses. What about the dogs? Could I afford the trip? Could Janet take a couple of unscheduled vacation days to look after Dot? It's silly to fret about this, since I haven't even been accepted yet. Actually, I haven't even applied yet, but I probably will. I really enjoyed being NASA's guest at Vandenberg Air Force Base last January, so having an opportunity to do this again at Kennedy Space Center would be fantastic.

I got a call from the cancer center today telling me that it was time to schedule Dot's next ultrasound scan. It doesn't seem like it's been two months since her previous scan, but it will be soon. I made the appointment and am hoping that we'll continue to hear good news. Dot has felt so much better since we discontinued the chemotherapy treatments. I'd hate to even consider resuming them again.

I was almost certain it was going to rain when we walked the dogs this morning. The sky was heavily overcast and there was a light mist. It's even darker walking in the dark on a cloudy day. I decided that we definitely need some more streetlights in our neighborhood. As the day progressed, the chances of rain diminished and by mid-afternoon I was seeing patches of blue sky again. This would have been a good day to get all the pecan shells off the roof, but I got sidetracked by other things. If it rains tomorrow, I'm really going to wish I'd taken advantage of the opportunity to remove the messy shells while they were still dry.

I should have heard from the watch winder company about my repair by now, but I haven't. Why am I not surprised? I'm not a very high priority on anybody's list these days. Since there were no deadlines to meet today, I did some routine bookkeeping and worked out a termination agreement with the website client who wants to move on to greener, cheaper pastures. Other than walking the dogs, the only time I got out of the house was to renew a few prescriptions at the pharmacy.

I tried to get Dot's physical therapy moved back to the afternoon, but the best I could do was buy myself an extra half hour in the morning. Once again, it's amazing how time flies. It seems like it was just yesterday when I was getting the car ready to take Dot downtown for last week's appointment. I guess you know that today was the day Marty McFly and Doc traveled to in the future to repair the damage from their previous time travels. Back to the Future is all in the past now. The film accurately predicted that we would that we would be flying drones everywhere and watching large flat screen TV's, but didn't anticipate smart phones at all. I prefer the more distant futures envisioned in shows like Farscape and Lexx, but I did see all three Back to the Future movies. Wish me luck on my application to attend the Orbital ATK Cygnus launch. That's a spacey thing that's off in the future too.

Day 1652

Another rainy day. I don't think I would mind the rain so much if the dogs were better sports about it. They not only hate the rain, they are fearful of it. It's not a good combination. I tried to time their morning walk between showers and was mostly successful. Dot is very practical on these rainy day walks. She does her business quickly and is immediately ready to turn around and go home. Dash, on the other hand, is oblivious to an approaching storm until he actually gets wet. Then he freaks out and wants to run all the way home, which of course Dot can't do anymore. I'm always happy when I get the two of them back home in one piece without getting drenched.

I got another jury summons today. I wish they'd just leave me alone. It's a huge waste of time to spend the day sitting in the jury pool. I never get picked to sit on a jury panel anyway. I've been doing this for years and years and lawyers for both sides don't seem to think I would be beneficial to their case. Almost inevitably, I am dismissed about 3 PM to go home without serving on a jury at all. Maybe I can postpone this summons one more time, but I have a feeling that I may have used up my allotted excuses.

There were more animal rescue websites to update this morning. I still think these websites are important, but I'm beginning to wonder if anyone reads them. Increasingly, adoptions and rescue communications are being handled through Facebook. Facebook just works better, because that's where the people are. Facebook has proved more effective for fundraising, for showcasing adoptable animals, and for raising awareness about important issues. I'm pretty sure that the only time people visit the rescue websites is when there's a link to them on Facebook.

Sadly, I could say exactly the same thing about this blog. I think there are only three people left in the entire world who actually leave comments on the blog itself. The rest see my posts only when they are syndicated to Facebook. In retrospect, I think blogging was most popular before social media existed. I remember lively discussions on all sorts of blogs that are largely silent now. Back in the day, even my business website got lots of comments and feedback. That would be unheard of now. Most businesses can't even get their customers to leave a short review on Yelp. Clicking on the "Like" button is all you're going to get these days. I'm as bad as the rest of you. All I do is click on the "Like" button, although I do wish sometimes there was a "Dislike" button as well.

I just looked at the weather report and it is supposed to rain for the rest of the week. Maybe this would be a good time to get to know those "hundreds of channels" I supposedly now have access to on my Roku streaming stick.

Day 1435

I haven't picked up the guitar in quite a while. It's been even longer since I've taken the telescope outside on a clear evening to look at Jupiter's moons. I can't even remember the last time I spent an entire evening reading a good book. I enjoy these things. So why am I spending so much of my time doing things I don't enjoy? Unfortunately, there are no easy answers.

I'm not trying to make excuses here, but life has fundamentally changed. The changes aren't big, in and among themselves, but they add up. It takes longer to fix healthy meals than to pick up a burger at a drive-thru. It takes longer to maintain an exercise regime than to watch TV on the couch. It definitely takes longer to earn a decent living. Where are all the assistants and copy typists I used to have? Where is the world I used to love?

Personally, I think that globalization and technology have combined forces to destroy a delightfully inefficient world where jobs were abundant and expectations were low. It isn't really surprising to me that health care isn't working anymore and entire countries are going bankrupt. The complexity of modern life is simply staggering. It is still a world of amazing opportunities, but it's all getting a lot harder to understand and many of us are simply running in place.

I don't have a grand plan anymore. I just get up every morning and methodically move from one task to the next. I always start with the simple things, but sometimes that's as far as I get. I got about halfway done today. The dogs got a good walk. I made it to the gym. I got several articles finished and shipped off to the client. I got stuck on my website project though. I'm confused. I'll need to do a bit more research to figure this one out.

If I wasn't so busy, I might enjoy the beautiful Fall weather we're having a bit more. We're really getting some fabulous Fall color this year. Texas will never be New England, but I see a lot of brilliant reds and yellows as I walk through the park with the dogs. I wonder why the leaves turn bright colors one year and are dull brown the next? I have a feeling that I might be happier if questions like these were the only things I had to worry about.
