Day 3361

It's hard to get used to Texas weather. It was eighty degrees this afternoon and I had the air conditioner running in both the house and the car. It was such a warm day that we were even able to give Dash a much needed bath. We used to regularly take the dogs to neighborhood dog washing facilities, but Dash has difficulty standing up in the tubs now. There's not enough room to bathe him at home in the shower, so we have to wait for a warm day and go outside. It takes two of us to clean him and everybody gets wet, but the effort is worth it when he starts to smell like pee.

Dash didn't enjoy his bath, but he sure smelled good afterwards. He did enjoy two leisurely walks on a beautiful, warm day. Maybe Spring isn't quite here yet, but it's definitely on the way. It felt like Spring today.

I went back to the hotel for breakfast, because I felt like relaxing. The dining room is always quiet and sedate and the waiters know me by name. Even the chef looked up and smiled when I arrived this morning. I'd eat at this place all the time if the menu wasn't so small. Everything is delicious, but you'd think they could come up with more than four items. The trendy restaurant seems to have hundreds of items on their breakfast menu.

I knew when we gave Dash a bath that there would be other cleaning as well. A clean dog doesn't last long in a dirty house. Both of us spent most of the afternoon vacuuming, dusting, and doing laundry. All this activity didn't stop Dash from peeing on the living room floor, but the house is reasonably clean now. I expect that this will last about two days.

I finally got the telephone bill. In an effort to pressure me to go paperless, they keep sending me my bill later and later. If I don't pay it on the same day it arrives, I'll get hit with a late fee. A week before this bill arrives, I get an e-mail saying that my paper bill will arrive in seven to ten days and asking me if I wouldn't prefer to just pay it electronically. So far, I have resisted. What's so bad about writing checks and taking bills to the post office? I like the leisurely pace of paper. The electronic world seems hectic and rude.

Even the airlines have done away with paper. I was wondering when I was going to get my boarding pass for my trip to Houston and then I got a message saying that I should download the airline's app and an electronic boarding pass would show up on my phone. It's a brave new world we live in. I find it ironic that everybody is worried about hacking, but still feel compelled to live their lives online. People didn't tend to steal your information when you put it in a letter.

I was hoping for a good night's sleep last night, but Dash had other ideas. He pooped in the bed three times. Everything landed squarely on the puppy pads and it only took me a minute or two to roll the pad up, seal it in a plastic bag, and take it outside. I've even gotten better at quickly getting back to sleep after these episodes, but it's not the same as an uninterrupted night of sleep. Eight hours of continuous sleep is still the holy grail. Oh, well. Three blocks of two hour sleep, followed by a one hour nap are still better than nothing.

Day 3336

Dash had no desire to get up this morning. Neither did I, but I knew I had a limited time to get him outside to pee before he wet the bed. I finally managed to get him out of bed, but as soon as he went outside and did his business, he headed straight back to the bedroom. He knew it was a rainy day and he wasn't going anywhere. Since I couldn't make the bed with Dash in it, I went to the kitchen and fixed my smoothie instead. I thought Dash would follow me to the kitchen, since he's always interested in food. He didn't budge. He has to take his morning meds on a regular schedule, so I took the pills and some sliced ham back to the bedroom with me. I rolled each pill in a small slice of ham and fed them to him one by one while he was lying in bed. The fact that he took the pills let me know that he was just being lazy. I suspect that he knew that Janet had already left for the morning and he could get away with anything with me.

Usually Dash poops right after he's taken his morning pills, so I was reluctant to leave him unattended for very long. I kept checking on him every few minutes as I was having my own breakfast and luckily I managed to catch him just as he was getting ready to poop. I quickly slid a puppy pad under him and made the save. No mess this time.

When I finished my smoothie, I went up on the roof and made sure the pumps were working before the heavy rain I saw on the radar arrived. These pumps help keep the water level on the roof from getting too high when it rains, but they are finicky and always seem to get clogged at the worst possible time. Luckily, I was able to get both pumps working today.

Dash's morning walk didn't take place until noon today, but at least he still got one. There was a light drizzle, but we didn't get too wet. After Dash's exceedingly lethargic morning, I thought that he wouldn't even want a walk. I was wrong. These slow, stumbling, and often aimless walks are the high point of his day.

Janet added me to her Costco membership last month, so we went to the store after lunch so I could get my membership card. Their card printer was broken, so I'll have to go back later. I'd never been to a Costco before. This one seemed like a giant Sam's Club with a more upscale suburban customer base. It was a little bit overwhelming. I'll probably continue going to Sam's.

Today's rain was strong enough to be a legitimate test of the roof repairs. Fingers crossed. I will be watching the ceiling very carefully for the next few days looking for signs of moisture. I've learned that the water doesn't always appear immediately. Sometimes it can take quite a while to find it's way inside.

I actually got a decent amount of sleep last night. Hey, lets go for two day in a row. There's still a lot of catching up to do. All I seem to think about these days is sleep and food. Of course I think about water on the roof and dog poop too, but you get my point. Life has become very simple. I suspect that life was always pretty simple. I just didn't realize it when I was younger.

Day 2463 - 9/11

It's hard to believe that it's been fifteen years since the twin towers fell. It seems like yesterday. It's even harder to believe that after all these years, we still aren't any safer than we were then. Two wars and thousands of lost lives haven't made much of a difference. World War II was much shorter from beginning to end than this weird war we're fighting now. Part of the problem is that this has never been a war between nations. It is a clash of civilizations.

You've got part of the world living in the Twenty First Century and another part of the world living in the Fourteenth Century. The Western world should have never allowed itself to become dependent on oil from the Middle East. Middle Eastern countries have been fighting among themselves for thousands of years, but if we didn't need their oil, we would never have needed to get involved. To me, this whole notion that we are one world with a common purpose has been disastrous. I've never been a big fan of globalization. A lot of little countries, each independently moving along at their own pace and living according to their own agenda would be better for everybody.

I met my sleep goal for the first time since I started wearing fitness trackers. I was amazed that I got over eight hours of sleep last night. I woke up once during the night, because Dot had to go outside and pee, but after that, she was relaxed and slept until well after 8 AM. It will probably be a long time before this happens again. Tomorrow, Janet gets up at 5 AM to get ready for work and the dogs wake up shortly after because they know she fixes their breakfast. We've usually completed our first morning walk before 6:30 AM. Getting up early would be fine if it weren't for the fact that I always go to bed late.

Maybe the extra sleep helped my coordination. I shot baskets at the gym better than I have for a long time. I'm not very good, so getting five free throws in a row is a big deal. This success made the rest of my workout seem bearable and I briefly contemplated going to the gym more than once a week. There are often a lot of nice cars in the parking lot when I go to the gym on Sunday. Today I parked between a Bentley and a Porsche Panamera. I tried to guess who the rich guys were while I was walking on the treadmill, but nobody looked particularly successful. There were just a bunch of tired, out of shape old men doing the same things I was.

The world has certainly changed in fifteen years. I didn't think I needed to go to the gym fifteen years ago. I wasn't as healthy as I thought though. I had Hepatitis C and didn't even know it yet. The world wasn't as healthy as I thought either. My business was still pretty successful in 2001 and I remember flying to Germany for a business meeting about a week after 9/11. The airport was filled with soldiers and everybody on the plane seemed nervous. I knew that the world had changed, but I had no idea that the repercussions of that day would continue year after year, seemingly forever. If you had told me than that in 2016 the European Union would be on the verge of collapse, that tribalism had replaced nationalism, that it was next to impossible to find a good job, and that the United States would have two candidates running for president that the voters generally hated, I wouldn't have believed you. Lord knows what will happen next year.
